World Alzheimer's Month ๐Ÿง ๐ŸŒ

Dementia is an umbrella term for a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain and impact on memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion. The most common is Alzheimerโ€™s disease, which affects 50-60% of people with dementia.

The specific symptoms will depend upon what parts of the brain are affected and/or the specific disease that is causing their dementia. Symptoms may include:

> loss of memory
> difficulty in finding the right words or understanding what people are saying
> difficulty in performing previously routine tasks
> personality and mood changes

World Alzheimerโ€™s Month brings together people living with dementia, their carers and family, care and medical professionals, researchers and scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs, the media and more, from all around the world.

If you have been diagnosed with dementia, finding this out can come as a shock, even if you have felt that something was not quite right. You may have lots of questions about what this means, what happens next with your family, how this could impact on your work and your social life, and who can help you.

Chatting with your GP is the first place to start. We have lots of resources to guide you through this journey.

Do you know someone with dementia? Remind them today of your support & love. Teamwork makes the dream work! ๐Ÿ’œ

International Dog Day! ๐Ÿ•๐ŸคŽ

Research shows that having a dog by your side can improve your overall physical and mental health!

Feeding, grooming, playing and letting them outside all increase physical activity levels, in turn improving blood flow and reducing joint stiffness. Walking your pup for 30 minutes a day will reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, colon and breast cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. It can also help you to achieve a deeper, more restful sleep.

Owning a dog has been linked to better mental health and a lower perception of social isolation, which can reduce the risk of heart attacks and cognitive issues. Being socially isolated is a strong risk factor for worse health outcomes and premature death. Dog owners interact more with other people, such as other dog owners and people they encounter on walks, and are less likely to experience depression.

Show some love to some of our 'clinic dogs', Billy & Samba, Molly & Steph's beautiful pups. Comment a photo of your dog below!

Ooh baby baby!

Congratulations on your precious newborn!

Your baby will need several appointments with a nurse & GP from 6 weeks old to the first 2 years of their life. We are here to help guide you and check the general health and growth of your new bestie!

You will receive the 'Red Book' here in Queensland, which is a free personal health record keeping track of your child's health, developmental milestones, and vaccination history.

A baby check should take 30 minutes with your GP, including some nurse time to complete vaccines (all hands on deck so yours are free for cuddles straight after!), and depending on your birth experience & own medical history you can book 15 or 30 minutes for yourself to have a physical and mental health check, with time to ask as many questions as you need!

๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘€โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ”Most moles, brown spots and growths on the skin are harmless - but not always. Is it time for your annual skin check?

Finding melanoma at an early stage is crucial; early detection can vastly increase your chances for cure.

> Look for anything new, changing or unusual on both sun-exposed and sun-protected areas of the body
> In women, melanomas commonly appear on the legs
> In men, the trunk is the number one place melanomas develop
> Keep in mind that melanomas can arise anywhere on the skin, even in areas where the sun doesnโ€™t shine

Our doctors at Rosalie Milton Clinic regularly perform skin checks, and can even offer small procedures or biopsies before seeing a specialist! Book in below:

๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ—ฃโฐ๐Ÿš‘ Monday 4th - Sunday 10th August is National Stroke Week, which encourages us all to know the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) signs of stroke so that you can save a life.

Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions:

Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
Arms: Can they lift both arms?
Speech: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
Time: Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away.

Your GP and clinic nurse can assess your risk of stroke, and provide you with preventative measures. Book below!

Are you an organ & tissue donor?

Today marks the beginning of DonateLife Week!

This is an awareness week to encourage more Australians to join organ and tissue donation.

Only 1 in 3 Australians are registered to be a donor on the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR).

In 2025, we want all Australians to register as organ and tissue donors and be the reason someone else gets a second chance at life.

Anyone in Australia aged 16 and over can register on the Australian Organ Donor Register. It only takes one minute. The link is below:

SHINGLES is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in someone who has previously had chickenpox.

Most adults in Australia will be at risk even if they don't remember having had chickenpox in the past!

It commonly presents as a painful rash of fluid-filled blisters on one side of the face or body, often in a strip or band-like pattern.

Other symptoms can include headache, malaise, itching, tingling or severe pain. The most common complication of shingles is post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), when the nerve pain at the site of the rash continues for more than 3 months.

Shingles can last 10-15 days, but in rare cases it can lead to serious complications - including pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness and encephalitis.

Our GPs can treat shingles if diagnosed early (within 3 days of a rash developing).

Have you had chickenpox or shingles? Comment below! ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿฉบ

Dry July โ€ข the month where we all stop drinking alcohol!

This is a great opportunity to reassess our relationship with alcohol consumption and see the health benefits of taking a month off.

Here are some of the great reasons to join Dry July:

#1 Improvements to mental health
Alcohol may seem like a mood elevator when youโ€™re dancing and having a great time with your friends, but it is actually a depressant that can have serious negative effects on your overall mental health. Low moods can be aggravated, and low energy levels make situations feel worse.
Taking some time off alcohol allows your brain to level out and youโ€™ll be able to think with more clarity, dealing with any mental health issues in a much more positive way.

#2 Improved hydration
Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it makes your body dismiss fluids more frequently. An easily identifiable hangover symptom that can come up is dehydration. People can suffer from dry skin which has less vibrancy, and your lips can crack easily. Low hydration levels can also affect your concentration and energy, which can have a substantial impact on how efficient you are at work, during your gym sessions or classes.
When you stop heavy drinking, your skin begins to regain its plumpness, fine lines may soften and your face will reclaim its natural glow, plus, youโ€™ll feel much more alert.

#3 Healthier liver
Drinking a beer, wine or liquor is bad for the liver. After all, the human body isnโ€™t built to process alcohol. When someone consumes large amounts of booze, even just a few times, their liver must work extra hard to process it all. Over time, the liver gets exhausted.
Your liver is constantly working to regenerate itself. It produces new cells with the intention of fixing any problems that pop up. Itโ€™s one of the human bodyโ€™s most important organs, after all, so itโ€™s crucial that it stays in good shape.
When you give up alcohol, your liver will start to flush out all of the leftover byproducts that were produced over time and within a few months you will feel the benefits after cutting out alcohol.

#4 Improved weight loss
This is no surprise to anyone Iโ€™m sure, but all those extra calories in a delicious red wine with dinner tends to add up. Over time, a couple of wines each night can cause your weight to creep up until youโ€™re suddenly struggling to get those jeans on. This is because most alcohols have more calories per gram than protein and carbohydrates; only fat has more calories per gram.
When cutting out alcohol, your overall calorie intake will then decrease (as long as you donโ€™t replace alcohol with another high-calorie substitute.) Once you give up alcohol you will start to see your waistline shrinking and can easily drop a dress size or belt notch by the end of the month.

#5 Bigger bank account
The benefits of alcohol detox arenโ€™t just physical, it can also have a financial benefit as well. As everyone knows when youโ€™re constantly consuming alcohol, the cost of it can add up over time.
When on your own, a few beers or a glass of wine is only a small investment, but, when you drink daily, or even weekly, the cost can add up. When you stop drinking you will have some extra cash in your bank account that could be used for necessities.
