Chronic stress can throw off our natural breathing rhythm, triggering issues like hyperventilation, breathing discomfort, and even panic. Over time, this cycle of stress and disordered breathing can keep our nervous system in a constant state of alert, making it harder to feel calm and in control.
But there’s a way to break the cycle. Breathing techniques that increase CO₂ tolerance have been proven to stabilize breathing and reduce anxiety. By training our breathing, we can restore balance in the body’s stress response, helping us feel more grounded and resilient against daily stressors. This approach doesn’t just ease symptoms temporarily; it creates lasting stability in both body and mind.

Mouth breathing isn’t just a habit, it has profound implications for respiratory function, sleep, craniofacial development, and even posture. While anatomical causes play a role, persistent mouth breathing often stems from functional deficits, including nasal muscle dysfunction, breathing pattern disorders, and sensory misperceptions.
If you work with patients experiencing chronic nasal obstruction, dysfunctional breathing, or habitual mouth breathing, FNBR could be a game-changer in your practice.

🫁 How can we assess symptoms?
Dysfunctional breathing (DB) often shows up through hard-to-explain sensations — shortness of , restricted breathing, or extra effort when breathing.
But how can we accurately measure it?
In our study with K. M. Greenwood, we explored the development of the Self Evaluation of Breathing Questionnaire (SEBQ), a tool designed to assess two key dimensions of :
🔹 Lack of air: Sensations of air hunger, possibly linked to chemical (chemoreceptor) factors.
🔹 Perception of inappropriate or restricted breathing: Feelings related to the mechanical effort of breathing.
👉 Still in development, the could become a valuable clinical tool to better identify and address different aspects of dysfunctional breathing.
