🔥Lower Back Pain🔥

Are you experiencing sharp pains or a dull ache in you lower back? You may even have shooting pains, pins and needles or a burning sensation down your legs. 🦵 If so our physiotherapists can help you. Lower back pain is one of the most common conditions we treat in our clinics. 💥

Our lower back is referred to as our lumbar spine. Within our lumbar spine we have five very robust vertebrae (bone) separated by intervertebral discs. In addition we have a number of ligaments, tendons and muscles within the region to help support the lumbar spine but also allow it to still be mobile. 🏃‍♂️

There are many reason as to why we may experience lower back pain such as a bulging disc, a muscle strain or a joint dysfunction. A physiotherapist is able to provide appropriate treatments and exercises to help you overcome your lower back pain. 🤸‍♂️

If this sounds like you give us a call
4783 4699, to book an appointment with one of our physiotherapists. 🙂

BOWS & ARROWS/CHEST OPENERS

These stretches are great for improving mid back mobility and flexibility.

To perform bows and arrows - start on your side. You may use a pillow under your head if this is more comfortable. Place one hand on top of the other, then draw your top elbow back like you’re about to shoot an arrow (hence the name) and twist through your mid back. Then move the top arm back to the start position and move the top fingers as far as you can past the bottom fingers. Repeat 5-6 times each side.

To perform chest openers, start in the same position, with the 2 hands on top of each other. Then keeping your top elbow straight, lift your arm straight up and keep moving it behind you whilst twisting through your mid back. Then return to the start position. Repeat 5-6 times each side.

Before beginning any type of exercise, including this one, I recommend you chat to your physio to find out if it’s suitable for you, as underlying conditions may prevent you from doing certain movements.

MY MOTHERHOOD JOURNEY - PART IV (birth story)

Kicking off where I finished last week, it was 6.30pm and my contractions were intensifying as the minutes passed. With each contraction I had to stand up, walk around and lean on the head of the bed to help me through them. I had a hot shower (not knowing when my next shower would be) and visited the toilet too many times to count - the downward pressure got quite intense.

By 8pm, my midwife came back to the room and advised us it was time to get back to the birth suite. Upon arrival, she checked my progress and removed the prostaglandin tape. I was continuing to dilate and the contractions kept building to a point we discussed pain relief. I chose to start with gas and see how I went.

I remember being disappointed that after my first suck of gas, the pain had stayed the same. The midwives had a little giggle and said that it won’t take the pain away, it’ll just take me somewhere else (unfortunately it didn’t do this for me either)! One thing I did really like about the gas, was its ability to distract me and allow me to concentrate on breathing through the contractions.

I continued to have contractions until 9.40pm. I remember sitting on the edge of the bed with my midwife during one contraction, and at the end I made a grunting type sound. She asked me if I felt like I had to push, and I replied with, “Yes, I feel like I can’t hold it in anymore”. So up on the bed I got and was told the time had come to push.

That first push was such a relief! It felt so good knowing that the end was near, and surprisingly it hurt less than the contractions - until Darcie crowned. I describe this part of the birth as a Chinese burn of your va**na. It’s not the most pleasant experience, but I knew I had to breathe through this to allow time for my muscles and skin to stretch and hopefully avoid tearing. After 16 minutes of pushing, Darcie was born! I felt so lucky to have had a quick birth and no perineal tearing, just a labial tear and some grazing.

I’m also so grateful for my midwives Amelia and Bec who helped me bring Darcie into the world, they were absolutely fantastic and worth their weight in gold!

Next time I’ll discuss my in hospital care.

CHILD’S POSE STRETCH

This stretch targets the muscles throughout the back, behind the shoulders and quads.

To perform this exercise - start in a 4 point kneeling position. Your hands reach forward as far as possible. Once they are in position sit back on your heels. Hold this position for 20-30 seconds. You can then walk your hands to either side and repeat the stretch.

Before beginning any type of exercise, including this one, I recommend you chat to your physio to find out if it’s suitable for you, as underlying conditions may prevent you from doing certain movements.
