New Research Challenges the "Plant-Based = Longevity" Narrative

A 6-year study of older Chinese adults found something unexpected: vegetarians (especially vegans) were significantly less likely to achieve "healthy aging"—reaching 80 without major disease or cognitive, physical, or mental decline.

The vegetarian groups were more likely to develop chronic conditions, lose muscle mass, and experience cognitive decline compared to omnivores.

But here's where it gets interesting...

Vegetarians who maintained higher-quality diets performed much closer to omnivores. This reveals something important about nutrition science.

What this really tells us: It's not just about what you eliminate from your diet—it's about what you include. Quality matters more than category.

The bigger picture:
- Nutrient density trumps dietary labels
- Individual biology varies dramatically
- Muscle preservation requires intentional protein intake
- One-size-fits-all approaches miss the mark

This isn't about declaring any diet "bad" or "good." It's about recognizing that optimal nutrition is deeply personal and should be based on evidence, not ideology.

Your genetics, lifestyle, age, and health goals all matter more than following the latest dietary trend.

It was so lovely to be invited to visit Back in Motion in Bacchus Marsh and have a lunch meeting with these amazing physios! Myself and the other lovely Naturopath in town, Natalie talked about Naturopathy and shared our philosophy of healing with these guys! It is wonderful to discuss health conditions with other practitioners that are coming from a different angle. I often recommend a pelvic physio for my clients- but now I know we have access to this service right here in Bacchus Marsh! Looking forward to helping my clients find the help they need locally! Cheers to Health! Natasha.

Banana and buckwheat pancakes with fresh mint, cucumber and some chopped walnuts- oh and some maple syrup of course!! This was a new combo I tried because I had no apples! It was really nice and refreshing with the mint and cucumber. This meal has a lovely balance of warming and cooling ingredients, good fats, protein, and some complex carbs. Yummy 11am breakfast in the winter sun, full of good fats from eggs, avocado, anchovies and smoked salmon. This will keep me going to 4pm! As we get older we need to reduce carbohydrates and focus on proteins and fats instead. This helps to maintain a better cardiovascular profile and nourish systems that are ‘drying out’. Cheers to health! Natasha 🥑🥑

I’m really getting into late breakfast! I don’t eat until 10 or 11am , then I have a healthy snack in the afternoon about 3 and then dinner at 6-7pm. I’m keeping to an 8 hour eating window and it’s really helping to keep extra weight gain under control. I’m also trying to keep processed carbs to a minimum like biscuits, pasta, cakes etc. I do love some dark chocolate though!! I mean a girl has to live!! 🤣 Cheers to health! Natasha 🥦

Hi lovely people!! I got mountains of green cabbage with my organic order this week so I’ve been having it for breakfast stir fried gently with olive oil, some corn and believe it or not some pineapple!! It was so yum! Oh and I did add about a dessertspoon of kimchi base sauce from the asian supermarket! ( just love that umami taste!) plus I’ve had eggs- and also here a bit of toast plus avocados🥑 Let’s look at the nutritional benefits- Cabbage- great for gut bacteria to feed on, high sulphur content so wonderful for detox in the body- especially correctly detoxing oestrogen and contains glucosinolates which are anticancer compounds. Avocado- good fats, potassium, protein, b- vitamins to name a few. Corn contains some b- vitamins, fibre and lutein ( in the yellow part) which is good for cardiovascular and eye health. Pineapple is a good source of fibre and Vit C- plus it contains Bromelain which is a digestive enzyme to help you digest your food properly. The light rue toast contains b- vitamins, and complex carbs. The eggs are nutrient powerhouse with vitamin k, b- vitamins, vit d, selenium, protein and fat. If you choose to eat in a nutrient dense way, your body will thank- you in so many ways! Cheers to health! Natasha 🥬

Took the dog for a loop walk this morning along the river and then made myself some eggs, 1 piece of light rye bread, sardines, radish and cucumber. I’m trying to eat more protein a few times a week at breakfast as I’m wanting to improve my blood sugar regulation as perimenopause is making me more prone to hyperglycaemia. I’ve also started using kelp granules on my meals to get a little bit of iodine into my diet. That’s what you can see sprinkled on my eggs. Iodine is very important for down regulating and stabilising oestrogen receptors and maintaining good thyroid health. During times of hormonal transition like Perimenopause and Pregnancy our reproductive hormones are in flux and have a volatile relationship with our blood sugar, thyroid, stress hormones and neurotransmitters. This is when you may need to change your diet or lifestyle to accommodate what your body needs. Cheers to health! Natasha 🥒

Bit late with breakfast this morning! I got distracted by my garden! 🤣 So I’m now having brunch- 2 leftover toasted crusts of bread, a bit of medium salsa, some lightly smoked sardines, and the very last of my homemade sauerkraut- ok and cucumber!! This has complex carbs, protein, good omega 3 fats, lycopene, good probiotic bugs, and vit C , A and folic acid! Eating well doesn’t have to be super fancy or difficult! Cheers to health! Natasha 🥒
