Puberty can be a challenging time for both young people and their families.
As children grow, they need extra support, patience, and understanding. Small actions, like showing affection, listening without judgment, and encouraging healthy routines, can make a big difference in helping them feel safe and confident.
Remember: you donโt have to do it alone. If your child is struggling, reaching out for professional support can help them (and you) navigate this stage with more ease.
Ways you can support your adolescent:
- Show affection & acceptance - tell them you love them, approve of who they are, not just achievements
- Be involved while encouraging autonomy - take interest in school, friends, activities, and support strengths; gradually let them take responsibility
- Establish clear family rules & consequences - involve them in creating rules, explain consequences clearly
- Encourage healthy routines - sleep, balanced meals, physical activity, limited screen time
- Minimise conflict in the home - stay calm, avoid criticism or shaming, model negotiation and listening
- Help with emotions & thinking - label feelings, teach balanced thinking, allow them to share worries
- Set goals & solve problems - guide realistic goal-setting, brainstorm solutions together
- Support when something is bothering them - listen without judgment, validate feelings
- Teach coping for anxiety - deep breathing, visualization, gradual exposure to fears, ensure rest and downtime
- Encourage seeking professional help when needed - GP, school wellbeing team, or mental health professionals; parents should also look after their own wellbeing.
