Winter may be approaching and the UV levels are dropping here in Victoria, but skin cancer grows all year round. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
If you notice a new or changing spot or mole, don't delay in getting it professionally checked - time is of the essence for melanoma especially. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
We cover up more as it get's cooler, which means we should be actively checking our skin, as it's not exposed as much to notice things. ​​​​​​​​
Or better still, book an annual skin check so you have peace of mind your skin is getting a thorough check, yearly.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin is the second most common form of skin cancer, characterized by abnormal, accelerated growth of squamous cells. SCC accounts for about 30% of non-melanoma skin cancers in Australia and when caught early, most SCCs are curable.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
They usually appear where the skin has had most exposure to the sun (head, neck, hands, forearms and lower legs). SCC generally grows quickly over weeks or months.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
Symptoms of SCC may include:​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
➡ thickened red, scaly spot​​​​​​​​
➡ rapidly growing lump​​​​​​​​
➡ looks like a sore that has not healed​​​​​​​​
➡ may be tender to touch.​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
While the majority of SCCs can be easily and successfully treated, if allowed to grow, these lesions can become disfiguring, dangerous and even deadly. Untreated SCCs can become invasive, grow into deeper layers of skin and spread to other parts of the body.

Skin cancer can look very much like a sore, or a patch of dry or scaly skin. As we age, our skin changes in all sorts of ways - but sun damage on the skin isn't due to age as such - its the amount of UV exposure your have had over your life. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
The temples, nose and ear's are common sites for non-melanoma skin cancer (BCC & SCC) but also for sun damage spots which haven't turned to skin cancer yet. ​​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​​
It's never to late to start protecting your skin, and your face, chest and hands (or even arms) are the most common sites for sun damage to occur due to the constant exposure.
