A few weeks ago, our OT, Physio, and Therapy Assistant teams completed manual handling training with Julie.

Yesterday, we hired the Safe Actions Space to capture photos and videos to update our care plans and develop easy-to-read resources for support staff and family members.

Now comes the big task of sorting through hundreds of photos and clips to turn them into practical guides that support safe, consistent manual handling in everyday practice.

It’s exciting to see training come to life in a way that will have real impact for the people we support.

It’s Brain Injury Awareness Week (18–24 August) and this year’s theme says it all: “Invisible disabilities deserve visible change.”

Brain injury often goes unseen, but the impacts can last a lifetime. Fatigue that hits like a wall, memory or attention difficulties, sensory overwhelm, emotional dysregulation, or just feeling flat and unmotivated.

At ISSWA, we work alongside people living with brain injury, including those involved in the justice system. Too often, their challenges are misunderstood and labelled as “non-compliant”, “aggressive” or “lazy”, when in reality, people are navigating invisible barriers without the right support.
Our team helps people build routines, skills and confidence through meaningful activity – from cooking meals, communicating with others, to reconnecting with valued roles and connecting them with the supports they need.

This week, we want to highlight the amazing work of Synapse - Australia’s Brain Injury Organisation.
Their Reconnections Support Groups (Perth) and practical online resources provide invaluable support for people with brain injury, family members, partners and professionals.

Let’s continue to raise awareness, challenge assumptions, and create visible change.

👏 We’re adapting - and we’re celebrating the wins along the way. 👏

Following on from our recent post, where we shared how ISS WA is responding to the NDIS pricing changes — today we wanted to highlight a real, positive moment from this week.
One of our participants, recently released from prison, visited the ISS WA Hub for the very first time to complete a therapy assistant (TA) session.
Using an easy-read recipe created by his TA, he planned and prepared a batch of Spaghetti Bolognese to eat during the week. He practiced kitchen safety, sequencing, and time management skills - all goals he’s been working towards across previous sessions whilst incarcerated.
Importantly, he also made meaningful connections with other staff in the office, sharing his passion for sport and peer support.
Having access to a safe and supportive space outside the home opens up new opportunities for skill-building, connection, and confidence - and that’s something worth celebrating.

It’s been quiet on our socials, but far from quiet behind the scenes!
With today marking the rollout of the new NDIS pricing changes, we want to update our community on what we’ve been doing at ISS WA to respond.
The recent pricing cuts - particularly reductions in therapy rates and travel time - have had significant sector-wide impacts. Like many providers, we’ve had to adapt quickly to protect the sustainability and quality of the services we provide.

Over the past few weeks, our team has been:
✅ Advocating - engaging with sector stakeholders, attending group meetings, and supporting petitions calling for fairer funding
✅ Adapting - realigning caseloads, increasing clinic-based sessions and telehealth where appropriate
✅ Supporting - consulting closely with participants and their support networks to navigate these changes together
✅ Strengthening - refining our internal policies and processes to uphold our standards and values

We know change can feel unsettling, but our purpose remains the same: to creatively challenge expectations and provide people with disability the opportunity to be the expert in their own life.
We’re here, we’re adapting, and we’re in this together.

This Men’s Mental Health Week, we’re reminded that strength isn’t about staying silent — it’s about being honest, vulnerable, and seeking help when it’s needed. 💬

Too many men suffer in silence, battling anxiety, depression, stress, or trauma without ever reaching out.

The truth is: mental health doesn’t discriminate, and it doesn’t make you ‘less of a man’ to talk about it.

Let’s normalise real conversations. Let’s check in on the men in our lives — not just with ‘you good?’ but with real listening and real support. And if you’re struggling, know this: you are not alone, and you never have to face it by yourself.

It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to feel. And it’s more than okay to talk about it. 💙

Last week, our team swapped the office for the city streets, teaming up for an Amazing Race hosted by AmazingCo – and it was exactly the recharge we we needed!

We broke into teams and tackled a series of hilarious and creative challenges, including:
🧠 A good old pub quiz
🎭 Team charades and live re-enactments of movie scenes (shoutout to the unsuspecting public who joined in!)
🎨 Creating optical illusions
🎤 Karaoke performances
🗺️ Tracking down city landmarks like the Bottle Cap Tree and Pier Street Laneway murals

We wrapped it all up with drinks and debriefs at The Reveley Bar. Shoutout to our brilliantly themed teams:
👑 Bows Before Bros – tutus and bows, too cute!
🤠 Sassy Saddles – yeehaw energy in pink cowboy hats
💻 Ctrl + Alt + Slay – pink-powered sass
👚 Six in the City – absolutely nailed the custom t-shirts
📺 Teletubbies – no explanation needed

Such a great way to reconnect, laugh, and celebrate the teamwork we bring into our day-to-day roles.

Some of the ISS WA team had the privilege of joining Break the Boundary Inc at the Banff Mountain Film Festival last week — an experience made possible thanks to a Volunteering WA and Lotterywest grant celebrating National Volunteer Week.

One short film that resinated with us was “109 Below” — a reflective and emotional recount of a 1982 mountain rescue. The story follows the New Hampshire Mountain Rescue Service and Hugh Herr who became trapped on Mount Washington during a winter descent, ultimately losing both legs to frostbite. Tragically, a member of the Mountain Rescue Service lost his life during the mission to save Hugh and his friend — a burden Hugh openly confronts in the film.

The film shared powerful perspectives from both sides of the rescue, reflecting on sacrifice, survival, and legacy.

Today, Hugh is a leading figure in prosthetic innovation at MIT and holds the patent for the Rheo Knee — a computer-controlled knee used by many of the participants we work with!

Thank you to Break the Boundary for the invite and for your continued advocacy for adaptive outdoor adventure.
