Surf Life Saving in Western Australia is a volunteer based not-for-profit community service organisation, providing an essential educational and emergency rescue service to all users of West Australian beaches. Surf Life Saving is a part of the history, fabric and future of this country. It represents the lifestyle, values and beliefs of the Australian culture. It protects life, it saves life, it promotes life. We create a safe environment in and around our beaches, through patrols on, in and above the shore and through education and training programs. Surf Life Saving is the largest volunteer movement of its kind in Australia and exists only through community donations, fundraising and corporate sponsorship. Surf Life Saving Western Australia comprises a State centre, 31 surf life saving clubs, support operations teams on the water and in the air and over 21,500 members who are all committed to saving lives and positively impacting on their local communities.

We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Life Saving WA Life Member Roy Becker.

Joining Fremantle (Leighton) SLSC as a Nipper parent in 1972, Roy quickly stepped into a service role, taking on the position of Juvenile Director, which he held for 6 years, assisting across both Leighton and Port Juveniles and the State Juvenile Team, including serving as State Juvenile Team Instructor.

Awarded his Bronze Medallion in 1974, from 1978 to 1986, he took on the role of Chief Instructor (Education Manager), producing and organising instruction programs to ensure members were well prepared for their assessments.

Roy was also involved in the organisation of Club camps and training sessions to improve the fitness and skills of members. Remaining fit and active himself, in 1987, he won the Australian Over 55 Beach Sprint and Beach Flags double!

His involvement extended beyond just his Club, with him joining the SLSWA Board of Examiners as an instructor, assessor and carnival official.

Roy was awarded Life Membership of Fremantle in 1989 and of Surf Life Saving WA in 1993.

Our sincerest condolences go out to Royโ€™s family, friends, and loved ones.
