Does your child pick up an object on the left side of their body with their left hand but if it’s on their right side, they use their right hand?

They may have difficulty crossing their midline which can make other daily activities such as reading, writing, even sitting more difficult!

Some activities to help develop your child's ability to cross their midline include, playing cars on a large path using their dominant hand to drive the car, use large paint brushes and rollers to ‘paint’ the side of the house with water and practicing windmills (ie: bend to touch hand to opposite foot then stand upright and repeat with other hand and foot).

Jump Up For Kids is saying goodbye to social media — and here's why.

We’re an Outdoor Occupational Therapy practice on a mission to empower children to become healthy, confident, and contributing humans in today’s fast-paced world. Every day, we champion children’s independence in the essential occupations of childhood — rest, learning, play, and self-care.

We do this FIERCEly, guided by our core values:
Flexibility • Imagination • Excellence • Respect • Collaboration • Empowerment

But something hasn’t felt right.

We can no longer ignore the harm social media is causing — to children, families, and communities.
We see the effects daily: reduced attention, rising anxiety, disrupted sleep, and lost connection.
As adults, we know screen time often steals our time, energy, and joy. As professionals, we know social media platforms fuel polarisation and distraction.

So we’re making a bold, values-aligned decision:
Jump Up For Kids is permanently stepping away from all social media.

This may not be the smartest business move — but it is the right one.
Because living our mission means more than saying the right things. It means doing the right things.
And we want to be part of building a world where children — and communities — can thrive.

We’re still here. Still FIERCE. And still doing what we do best.
You can keep up with us by:

- Reading our monthly newsletter

- Visiting our website

- Giving us a call

- Dropping by

- Or even checking the letterbox — you might get real mail from us!

So it’s goodbye to socials, but not goodbye to connection.
Thanks for walking this path with us.

Stay FIERCE.

Young children often don’t have the words to talk about how they are feeling. Instead, they sometimes act out these emotions in physical and inappropriate ways. Here’s some ways to support their emotional development.

Encourage children to express emotions by identifying and discussing them

Talk about your own feelings with children: “when I missed the train, I felt mad. Do you remember how my face looked when I was mad? Can you make a mad face like mine?”

Be mindful of how we show and respond to our own emotions.

Discuss and explore emotions during calm moments, do NOT discuss emotions during a child’s meltdown

Once children express an emotion, discuss how to change it, if needed. Model the language and approach by saying, “I feel sad. Can you help me find someone to play with?”
