Mecwacare

Mecwacare mecwacare is a not-for-profit, providing aged care and disability services in Victoria since 1959. Caring is at the heart of everything we do.

mecwacare is proudly a not-for-profit, non-denominational charitable organisation that has been supporting Victorians for more than 62 years. We are a values-based, care-driven organisation that provides residential, community and in-home nursing, care and support services for the elderly and people living with a disability. mecwacare was founded by a small group of volunteers concerned about the elderly and vulnerable in their local area and formally became the Malvern Elderly Citizens Welfare Association (MECWA) in 1959. In 2007, MECWA changed its name to mecwacare to better represent the organisation’s focus as it grew into a major provider of aged care and disability services across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. We provide optimal choice for people of all ages, irrespective of financial, religious, cultural or lifestyle background. Today, we care for more than 17,000 people each week across greater Melbourne and regional Victoria through a highly integrated service network operated by more than 2,000 employees and 500-plus volunteers. Our staff are culturally and linguistically diverse, representing 89 nationalities and speaking 100 languages.

Our Story

Ballan District Health & Care – located between Melbourne and Ballarat along the Western Highway – is a rural healthcare provider to the residents of Ballan and surrounding districts.

Employing more than 160 people and supported by more than 60 volunteers, Ballan District Health & Care provides an integrated single-site model of care: offering primary healthcare, hospital care, aged care, rehabilitation services, and welfare and wellness services.

Ballan District Health & Care commenced operations in 1966 as a six-bed Soldiers’ Memorial Bush Nursing Hospital. The hospital opening represented a significant community achievement. Many local people had made the Ballan Hospital their life’s work.
