Where do you notice stress popping up in your life. Muscular tension, brain fog, shortened temper, rumination, bad dreams, high blood pressure, chronic health condition flares, cravings, fatigue? Feel free to add to the list with your own observations, but also, feel free to do something about it.

The intelligence of the breath is amazing. It not only responds to everything that is happening to and around us, but integrates information from past experiences as well. This means it predicts our future needs too.

Although these predictions usually serve us well, with the intention of keeping us alive and safe, occasionally they can overshoot the mark and cause a few issues.

Another amazing thing about the breath, is that we can, to some degree, take over the controls when the rest of our being feels we need to. This gives us an element of choice in how respond to the world. In order to change it though, we must be aware of it.

As breathwork guru Dan Brule suggests, 'we can't change how we feel without the breath changing and we can't change our breath without changing how we feel'. This means that we can change the way we feel, the way we 'show up', by consciously changing the breath!

'I really should do this', or 'should have done that', are pretty common themes in our depleting self-talk and rumination. Have you ever stopped to wonder if some of our shoulds and should haves actually serve us? Are they expectations of the past and obligations for the future that reflect our authentic selves, or are they based on our many and complex layers of conditioning and experience that have shaped who we think we should be for something or someone other than ourselves?
How might it feel to put down your should manual for awhile, in a supportive space and just be?

If you are stuck in ''exam prep'' mode or just keen to experience a little of the practical group work I offer, why not drop into the Smythesdale Youth Market next weekend for a look and to experience it for yourself?

Alongside stalls, games, performances and activities, we also have local businesses hosting workshops for young people.

Our first workshop of the day will be run by Simonays - Stress Management Consultant - a 45 minute breathwork, meditation and somatic workshop!

There will be so much for young people of all ages to see and do at the Smythesdale Youth Market!

As wellbeing and breathworkers, we often discuss the role of the CO2/O2 balance as a contributor to illness. Chronic stress can lead to overbreathing, which in turn alters this balance, also altering our ph levels, and impacting on blood flow in the brain. Research is showing there is much more to it.
Neutrophils flooding the brain is an inflammatory process, it's also one that is front and centre in auto-immune conditions in general.
We live in stressful times and there is a possibility that some hormetic practices, including using the breath and a range of other somatic techniques can help in the management of chronic stress.
I truly believe they are worth exploring.

What's occupying your thoughts? That's not a question for answering, but simply for noticing. Sometimes thoughts are helpful, sometimes they are not. Sometimes they are true and sometimes they are just the residue of what our nervous systems are processing. We often try to stop them, but that's like trying to stop the wind. Sometimes being with them but not buying into them, and gently, non-judgementally, and curiously redirecting our attention to the sensations we are feeling can be a better use of our energy.

All tension has a purpose, but not all tension serves your purpose!

Often it's purpose is to protect you from something that happened once. Often though, that thing isn't happening now but the patterns of tension (physical, mental, emotional) remain. Sometimes we don't even know they're there, but they signal to the rest of our systems that there is something needing to be defended against, thus perpetuating more tension.

While we make no promises for a tension 'factory reset', we'll certainly explore some key areas of tension and invite them to release.
