The things that take you by surprise after a C-Section: an honest review!

Not in a scary way.

Just a ‘oh my gosh, this is harder than I expected!’ kind of way.

Sitting up.

Sneezing 😳.

Trying to move while holding a newborn…

Ooof!

What would you add to this list?!

As a new Mum, recovering from a Caesarian, you might be caught thinking “Scar massage… Scar massage… Someone told me I need to do scar massage! Ok, ok… so I’ll start straight away?”

But - not so fast!

Any direct massage over the scar line needs to wait til your wound is fully closed. Often > 4 weeks.

Have you downloaded my guide to starting scar massage? 7 Days To A Better Scar. It’ll tell you all you need to get started!

Something I see all the time in the clinic:

A fresh, new Mum, resting back on the physio bed, looking down at her soft tummy, with that little frown…

You can almost see the thoughts rushing through her mind:

“Will this ever look or feel normal again?”

🥺

Sound familiar?

If this is you - please know:

Your body is not ruined.

It might not feel like it belongs to you right now…

But this is not your end point - this is early healing.

And healing takes time.

With the right support, gentle movement, and a good bit of patience, you will feel like yourself again!

So, save this post for the days that you need a reminder:

Your body hasn’t failed you.

You’re right where you need to be.

Your birth = your story. No one else’s. And no need to explain anything to anyone.

“I had a C-section/Caesarian” is a full sentence.

Walking after your Caesarian can be incredibly helpful for your recovery.

It helps
💜 Support circulation and reduce your risk of blood clots
💜 Reduce stiffness, and post surgery aches and pain, and (my favourite)
💜 Helps get your 💩 moving again after surgery!

But like everything after a C-section, it’s about starting gently and building gradually.

I’ll be sharing more helpful recovery tips throughout Caesarean Awareness Month 💛

If you’re recovering from a C-section right now, how far along are you?

(And if you’re pregnant - save this one to come back to post birth!)

“I just hate the thought of touching my scar!” said SO MANY WOMEN, all the time.

Sound familiar? If it does, you are DEFINITELY not alone.

My little hack for early scar management is this cute little Gua Sha.

And the bonus is, it comes in handy EVEN MORE down the track, when you’ve overcome your reluctance to touch your scar.

Have you tried this? I’d love to hear your feedback.

Just had a C-section?

Walking can be a beautiful first step in your recovery.

You don’t need to do much, and you definitely don’t need to rush, but I recommend you focus on LITTLE, EARLY, and OFTEN.

Start small.
A short walk around your hospital room, or a little stroll around the ward.

Start early.
Once you’re cleared to get up to the bathroom by yourself, you’re ready to start little bits of walking.

And walk regularly throughout the day. Every hour or two, try to be up taking just a small stroll.

You can do this during your hospital stay, thengradually build from there.

Over the first 6 weeks, aim to slowly work your way up to around 20 minutes of comfortable walking. Of course, at your own pace, and listening to your body along the way.

Gentle walking is so helpful for lots of aspects of your recovery:
• It helps to get your 💩 moving again after surgery
• It will help to swelling in your legs and feet
• Walking contributes to better blood flow/circulation
And
• It will also help you start reconnecting with your body!

Remember, it’s not about pushing yourself.

It’s about gentle, steady progress.

Small steps really do add up ❤️

There’s a version of C-section birth that gets talked about…

And then there’s the one most women actually experience.

The one that includes:

➰ A scar that doesn’t look or feel how you expected

➰ The weird numbness… or the super sensitivity 😵‍💫

➰The pulling, or tugging, or tightness, that can make you a bit hesitant to move sometimes

➰An odd feeling that your core just isn’t working the same way any more

➰And sometimes… a big, heavy, emotional weight sround how your baby was born.

These things are more common than you might actually think.

But - they’re also rarely explained properly to new Mums.

So many women are left wondering:

“Is this just how I AM now?”

It’s not about “bouncing back.” I think you know that, we are hearing it often enough.

It’s about understanding your body, and giving it the support it actually needs to heal.

Did any of these hit home with you? Tell me which number felt most familiar ❤️

This is the question that often throws Caesarian Mums a little.

They might say that they don’t have any issues with PAIN, or TIGHTNESS in their scar.

They might not be experiencing any pelvic issues, like leaking or painful s*x.

And they might not be struggling with a belly ‘pooch’ or ‘overhang’.

Which is all GREAT 👏🏻.

But when we start chatting about all things breath, it gets them thinking…

▶️ Can you take a big deep belly breath? And, if you can, is it EASY? Or does it feel hard to do?

▶️ Do you struggle with shortness of breath? Can you get puffed quite easily?

▶️ Do you notice stiffness or tightness around your ribs, or under your diaphragm?

🤔

These kinds of symptoms can be linked to scar tissue and adhesions from your C-Section scar.

Wild, isn’t it?!

So, if you’re a C-Section Mum, try a few good deep belly breaths for me, and ponder these questions above… then tell me - how’s your scar?
