The Concussion Naturopath Clinical Naturopath - Concussion - Post Concussion Syndrome - Healing at any stage

One of the things I hear in clinic all the time…
“Why does my mood suddenly feel different?”

If you’ve been through a concussion and noticed shifts in how you feel emotionally -more anxious, flat, irritable or just not like yourself - you’re not imagining things.

The answer?
A cascade of disruptors to your entire body.

A concussion doesn’t just affect your brain in isolation,it can impact your nervous system, hormones, gut health and inflammation levels… all of which play a role in how you feel day to day.

Understanding why it’s happening is the first step toward feeling like you again

Why do symptoms come back?

Ever felt fine… then suddenly everything flares again?

It’s called glial priming. After a concussion, the brain’s immune cells stay on high alert - reacting faster and stronger to stressors like illness, emotional stress, surgery, or even another injury.

So when you think, “It all came back,” it’s not random.

It’s ongoing neuroinflammation and systemic inflammation.

And it’s something we can work with

Did you know that if you’re an athlete or even just playing sport recreationally, your gut health can play a role before a head impact even happens?

Your gut and brain are constantly communicating through the gut-brain axis. When your gut is supported and balanced, it can help regulate inflammation, support your immune system, and strengthen your body’s overall resilience.

So when it comes to concussion, it’s not just about recovery - it’s also about preparation.

Looking after your gut health could be one of the most overlooked ways to support your brain.

Lately in clinic, I’ve been having some deeper conversations with my clients.

I’ve been asking one simple question -
If you had the chance to go back and do it all over again… would you?

These are athletes. Sporting professionals. People who have dedicated their lives to their game.

And the answers aren’t always straightforward.

Because when you’ve lived through concussion, the impact doesn’t just stay in the moment - it follows you. Into your health, your career, your day-to-day life.

It’s a reminder that concussion isn’t just a small injury. It’s something that can shape the course of a person’s future.

These conversations matter.
Because the more we understand the long-term impact, the more we can advocate for better support, better recovery, and better outcomes.

Herbal medicine does what nothing else can in concussion injuries - it supports the body to return to optimal functioning, on an inexplicable level, a synergistic symphony of phyto compounds 🪄

Curcumin, Bacopa, lion's mane and other herbal compounds have emerging research support for neuroinflammation and TBI recovery. Here's what the evidence actually shows.

Concussion is a whole body injury

It may start in the brain…
But it doesn’t stay there

A concussion triggers a cascade that can impact your nervous system, hormones, gut, immune system and energy production

This is why symptoms aren’t “just in your head”

You might experience:
– Brain fog
– Fatigue
– Headaches
– Mood changes
– Digestive issues
– Hormonal imbalances

Healing requires more than rest
It requires supporting the whole body

Because true recovery happens when everything is working together again

What happens in the brain during a concussion?

A concussion is not just an impact -it’s a complex brain injury that affects how your brain functions.

After a concussion, brain cells become disrupted, ions flood the cells, and a neuroinflammatory cascade begins. This leads to a brain energy crisis, where the brain needs more energy than it can produce.

This is why concussion symptoms can include headaches, fatigue, brain fog, mood changes, and hormonal imbalances. It’s also why post-concussion effects can extend beyond the brain, impacting the gut, immune system, and overall health.

Proper concussion recovery requires more than just rest - it needs targeted support to help the brain heal.

If you’re dealing with ongoing symptoms, there are ways to support your recovery.

It’s not just a “head injury” - a concussion affects your whole body.

When your brain sustains a concussion, brain cells are damaged and ions flood the cells chaotically. This triggers a neuroinflammatory cascade that doesn’t stay confined to the brain.

That cascade can impact your:
• Gut health
• Hormonal balance
• Immune system

Which is why “just rest” isn’t always enough.

At The Concussion Naturopath, we take a whole-body approach, because real healing means supporting every system involved.

Your brain is connected to everything. And your recovery should be too.

🚨 Let’s clear up a common concussion myth…

A concussion does NOT require a loss of consciousness.

In fact, it’s estimated that only around 10% of concussions involve being knocked out.

That means the majority of concussions happen without losing consciousness and often go unrecognised or dismissed.

If you’ve experienced an injury or impact and notice symptoms like headaches, dizziness, brain fog, or fatigue… it’s worth paying attention.

Your brain doesn’t need you to black out to be injured and it deserves proper care and support.

✨ Don’t ignore the signs. Early support can make all the difference.

What do we actually mean when we say the brain goes into an energy crisis after a concussion? 🧠⚡️

After an impact, your brain suddenly demands more energy than it can produce.

Think of it like this:
Your brain is trying to function, repair, and regulate itself… all while running on an empty tank.

This mismatch can lead to:
✨ Fatigue
✨ Brain fog
✨ Headaches
✨ Sensitivity to light & noise
✨ Slower recovery

It’s not “just in your head” - it’s a real, physiological response happening at a cellular level.

And this is exactly why proper support matters.

When we understand what’s happening inside the brain, we can support recovery in a way that actually helps -not just tells you to “rest and wait.”

Your brain deserves better care 🧠💛

I bet you didn’t know your evening cup of chamomile tea could be one of your best allies in reducing inflammation

Chamomile isn’t just calming for the mind -it’s packed with powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that support the body’s healing process, especially when recovering from concussion and nervous system stress.

Sipping on chamomile tea regularly can help:
✨ Calm the nervous system
✨ Reduce inflammation
✨ Support better sleep
✨ Aid overall recovery

Sometimes, the simplest remedies can make the biggest difference.

Your brain deserves gentle, consistent support
