This week is World Continence Week, providing an important opportunity to talk openly about an issue that is often kept quiet. Incontinence is defined as the involuntary loss of bladder and bowel control. Many people affected feel too embarrassed to seek help, not realising that it is an extremely common health concern. In fact over 5 million Australians - 1 in 4 people aged over 15 years - experience incontinence. But there is good news. With the right help, incontinence can be better managed, treated, and sometimes even cured.

Often the hardest thing to do is to take the first step to seek help. A great option is to make an appointment with a GP who can offer expert advice about the cause of your issue and the treatments available.

International Men's Health Week celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and takes place from Monday, June 10, to Sunday, June 16, 2024. This year, the focus is on Men's Health Checks.

Research shows that men are far less likely to regularly visit their doctor, going only when they are seriously ill.

Men's Health Week is a great reminder to men and boys that their health is important. Good nutrition, regular exercise, annual GP checkups and maintaining social connections are all crucial in maintaining your health but are often neglected. This week, remind the special males in your life (even if that means reminding yourself!) that their health is important and needs to be a priority.

Migraine Awareness Month is a global event held in June each year, raising awareness of migraine and reducing the stigma that migraine is 'just a headache'. Unfortunately that’s still a common misconception but the reality is that migraine is actually a very complex genetic neurological disorder. It’s certainly not something that paracetamol and a lie down will fix!

Are you doing everything you can to avoid COVID-19?

Victoria is experiencing an increase in COVID-19 in the community, with growing numbers of people being hospitalised with the virus.

Follow these six steps to help stay ahead of COVID-19:
1. Wear a mask: a high-quality and well-fitted mask can protect you and others from the virus.

2. Get vaccinated: stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccine. UFS offers the most up-to-date COVID-19 vaccines which are highly effective at preventing severe disease. You should get a booster if you fit within one of the recommended groups determined by ATAGI. 3. Let fresh air in: open windows and doors when you can – it reduces the spread of the virus. Meet outside when possible.

4. Get tested: if you have symptoms, take a rapid antigen test. If you test positive and are eligible for antivirals, take them as soon as possible.

5. Stay at home if you are unwell: if you have COVID-19, you should stay at home for at least five days and until you have no symptoms. Speak to your GP if symptoms worsen.

6. Take antivirals if eligible: if you are at risk of falling very sick, you may be eligible for COVID-19 antiviral medicines. You must take these within 5 days of developing symptoms - the sooner the better. Chat to your GP for more information.

Food Allergy Week is an important initiative of Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia, aiming to raise awareness of food allergies in Australia. Awareness and education helps to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and effectively treat potentially life-threatening emergencies when they happen.

❗️BE AWARE❗️
Australia has one of the highest incidences of food allergy in the world and this is increasing at an alarming rate; in fact, there has been a 7% year on year increase in food allergy fatalities over the last 15 years, and one in every 10 babies born in Australia will develop a food allergy.

With no known cure for food allergy, awareness and education are most important, as an allergic reaction can quickly become life threatening. A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) must be treated as a medical emergency.

It’s important for all of us to be aware of food allergies, know the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and know how to respond in an emergency.

❓HOW CAN UFS HELP❓
Diagnosis of your food allergy is the first step. If you or a family member are showing any worrying symptoms, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with one of our GPs at UFS Medical. Following diagnosis, you’ll need ongoing support and advice to manage your allergy safely and effectively. Our pharmacists are always happy to answer your questions and offer advice on any medications you may require.

UFS Medical also has an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) Sally Fyffe, who can provide practical guidance on managing your diet and allergy risks. Sally has a special interest in the management of Food Intolerance and Food Allergies, including the Royal Price Alfred Hospital (RPAH) Elimination Diet and can assist in supporting a change in diet to reduce symptoms such as gut or IBS symptoms, skin, airway or behavioural issues in both children and adults. Food intolerance is a complicated area that requires knowledge of what foods are made up of and how to manage these to improve symptom management.

Empowering Our Community Ballarat is partnering with Rotary and the Nappy Collective to launch a Regional Nappy Hub, helping to supply free nappies to vulnerable families in the community.

UFS is supporting this important initiative by placing nappy collection boxes at our Sebastopol, Sturt Street, Bridge Mall and Buninyong stores.
