Tuesday 3 June, we come together as a nation to recognise Mabo Day, a significant milestone in Australia’s journey towards reconciliation and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Mabo Day honours the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Torres Strait Islander man whose determination led to the 1992 High Court decision that overturned the false doctrine of terra nullius. This historic case recognised the land rights of the Meriam people and paved the way for Native Title legislation.
For us at The Support People (TSP), Mabo Day is more than a commemoration—it’s a moment to pause, reflect, and reaffirm our commitment to cultural safety, respect, and inclusion in our work.
Let us consider:
• How can we create a culturally safe and inclusive environment for First Nations clients and colleagues?
• How can we better understand the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples?
• What actions can we take to support Reconciliation in our daily work at TSP?
As a team, let’s continue to learn, listen, and honour the voices of First Nations communities.
Thank you for your dedication and for taking the time to reflect on this important day.

Established in 2018, Next Step Disability Services Pty Ltd (NSDS) provides a range of support services for adults with disability in Ballarat, Bendigo and surrounding areas. Originally established to provide a community hub, community access, personal skill development programs and personalised care for people living in Ballarat, NSDS has grown to support over 100 clients in regional Victoria. The rapid growth of our organisation in its first 12 months, is reflective of our focus on delivering high quality, person centred support.
More recently, we have expanded our services to ‘round the clock’ support for persons choosing to live in their own home. We are enthusiastic about the future possibilities for people to live as independently as possible in a supported independent living arrangement, and to position ourselves to meet this demand; and believe our wealth of prior experience in supported residential service accommodation has us well placed to make this a reality.
We are equally excited by our newly established Youth Headquarters (YHQ) which supports 18-25 years olds to have fun and learn new skills.
Our Mission - To enrich the lives of people through individualised services, delivered with a sense of warmth and friendliness, that empower people with disability to live their best life.
Our Vision - To be a leading provider of quality services in regional Victoria, creating an inclusive world where people with disability live enriched lives of their choosing with our support.
Our Values - Our values underpin everything we do.
