Balance Awareness Week 14-20 September 2025 - Better Balance starts from the ground up and Podiatry plays a role in keeping you steady on your feet!

Your feet are the foundation of your balance. If they’re sore, unstable, or not supported properly, your risk of trips and falls increases.

5 Tips for better balance:
1. Wear supportive, well-fitted shoes
2. Try simple balance exercises (like standing on one foot while brushing your teeth or while you are cooking!)
3. Get your feet checked regularly – conditions like bunions, nerve issues, or poor circulation can throw your balance off
4. Custom orthotics can help improve stability and confidence in every step
5. Regular exercise is so important to keep you on your feet and keep your muscles strong and steady.

Remember: Strong, healthy feet = better balance = fewer falls. Book your foot health check – a steady step is a safe step!

Do you have ongoing Achilles pain? Or it seems to get better, but then quickly make a reappearance?
Where there's pain, there's a problem - and a solution that can help you say goodbye to your pain once and for all!
Your Achilles is the strongest tendon in your body. It transmits power from your calf muscles to your foot, allowing you to push up off the ground and keep walking. It can take on up to four times your body weight during walking, and over seven times your body weight in running. This makes it vulnerable to injury and pain.
We help restore healthy function to the Achilles tendon and facilitate healing if damage has occurred. As it has a relatively poor blood supply compared to other tendons in the body, Achilles injuries tend to have a longer recovery time, especially without assistance.
We work to help repair the tendon using treatments like shockwave, keep it supported using therapies like orthotics, and help reduce your risk of re-injury in the future.

We actually look at it like a medical device that's going to keep your feet stable, controlled and supported throughout your recovery.
They're going to control how much your ankle rolls freely from side to side, the way you put pressure through areas of the foot, the force and shock that goes through your bones when you take a step - and MUCH more.
That's why footwear is such an important part of your treatment plan. You need to keep walking, right? But if the way you walk is one of the reasons you've developed that pain in the first place, then what's going to stop your pain from getting worse instead?
That's right - your shoes. And some orthotics if we assess that you need them. Your shoes will become the ground you walk on - and you want that ground to be helping your recovery - not slowing it down.
Need help finding the right shoes for your feet and your life? Our knowledgeable team can help!
Call us on 5331 2777 or book online https://www.myfootdr.com.au/our-clinics/ballarat-podiatry-centre/ to make an appointment.

A stress fracture is a small crack in the bone that develops gradually over time, often starting as a barely noticeable ni**le or a dull ache and gradually increasing in severity.

Stress fractures are not to be confused with regular fractures (your typical ‘broken bones’), which tend to occur suddenly, unexpectedly and are usually related to trauma, like falling from a height, being tackled, having a crash on your bike.

Have you ever noticed that with high-arched feet, your footprints tend to be smaller?

That's because less of your foot actually comes in contact with the ground - it's mainly the ball of your foot, your heel, and the outside border of the foot.

This is why those with high-arched feet are more vulnerable to developing calluses, corns, blisters and cracked heel in these areas - while being more vulnerable to pain from a stiffer foot that doesn't absorb shock quite as well.

If you have high-arched feet and are getting pain or discomfort you can make an appointment online https://www.myfootdr.com.au/our-clinics/ballarat-podiatry-centre/ or by calling 5331 2777

You can get a blood blister when something pinches your skin without breaking the surface.

So, what’s the difference between a blister and a blood blister? With a blood blister, instead of clear fluid like a normal blister, blood floods the area under the skin from broken blood vessels and damage to the lower layers of your skin.

Some reasons why you may get a blood blister include having ill-fitting shoes that rub your skin, participating in a sport that has you on your feet for long periods of time or getting your hand or foot caught in a door jamb.

A hard corn is similar to a callus, in that it is comprised of hard skin caused by friction. Where callus can be protective, and form from either friction or pressure, a hard corn develops when there is shearing across an area, spinning the callus into a conical shape. Corns can be very small (1mm) to up to 20mm. The conical shape means that corns are often more painful with direct pressure, like when you stand up, or put your shoes on.

Corns and calluses on the bottom of your foot can be painlessly removed by your podiatrist, usually in one appointment. Corns are ‘scooped out’, instantly removing the feeling of walking on a pebble, giving you a noticeable difference when your feet touch the ground. Calluses are often there to protect our feet, so your podiatrist will debride most of the callus, but usually leave a small and comfortable protective layer intact. Your podiatrist can also talk to you about how to prevent corns and calluses from returning.

Removing the callus and cracks can be done safely and effectively by your podiatrist. 🧑‍⚕️🦶
Your podiatrist will carefully debride the hard skin by hand, using their expertise to remove the ‘problem’ excess skin, but leaving the right amount of natural protection. A burr is then used to smooth the skin, getting rid of any uneven ridges.

🚨 Fatigue

Our podiatrists can assess your footwear, posture and gait (how you walk) to recommend boots that support your body and the way you work. The right boot is a great starting point to better foot health.

It’s National Diabetes Week 🦶

Did you know Diabetes impacts your blood vessels and nerves throughout your body? The vessels and nerves in your feet have travelled the furthest, so they can be the first to show signs of damage. And if you have reduced blood flow and damaged nerves in your feet? This slows down healing, reduces your ability to cope with daily activity and increases your risk of infections and ulcers (wounds that don’t heal).

Podiatrists play a key role in early detection and prevention. In fact, it is recommended that everyone with diabetes has their feet checked for signs of complications at least every year.

📅 Don’t wait. Schedule an appointment with one of our podiatrists!

The first signs of diabetes complications often show up in your feet. 🦶

When blood sugar is poorly managed, it can harm your nerves and blood vessel, especially in areas furthest from the heart and brain. That means your feet are often the first to feel the effects.

Don't ignore numbness, tingling, or pain. Your feet could be telling you something important!
