This Easter reminds us that hope doesn’t always come with certainty or clear answers. In health care especially, it is rarely loud or dramatic. Instead, hope reveals itself in the moments that truly matter.

May you find time this Easter to pause, reflect, and recognise the small yet meaningful signs of hope around you.

Today we observe Good Friday, a day of deep significance in the Christian calendar. For St John of God Health Care, it is a meaningful reminder of our calling to continue the healing mission of Jesus.

As we take time to reflect, may we recognise the opportunities in every moment to bring healing and hope to those in our care and to one another.

Over the past week and a half, St John of God Ballarat Hospital has had the privilege of welcoming colleagues from Tonga.

Among our visitors are members of the hospital executive from across the Kingdom of Tonga, including the Chief Nursing Officer and the Chief Medical Superintendent. Their visit has provided a valuable opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen professional connections, and reflect on our shared commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care.

We were also delighted to welcome a Ministry of Health team member from Niuas, the most northern island group of Tonga, a first for our partnership. In addition, we have appreciated the contributions of a nurse from the outer island group of Ha’apai, and radiology representatives from Vava’u working in collaboration with Lake Imaging, supporting mammography and ultrasound services.

We look forward to continuing this important work, with SJOG Ballarat caregivers preparing to travel to Tonga, including the outer islands, in May. This initiative is supported by the Australian Government through Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in partnership with the Ministry of Health Tonga and our dedicated SJOG Ballarat caregivers.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from one another and to contribute to healthier communities together.

Recently we celebrated St John of God Day, a special occasion that honours the life and legacy of St John of God, and the values that continue to guide our care every day: Hospitality, Compassion, Respect, Justice and Excellence.

It’s a time to reflect on the incredible difference our caregivers make in the lives of our patients, their families, and one another.

As part of the celebrations, we were also delighted to recognise our Length of Service Award recipients
These awards honour the dedication, loyalty and commitment of caregivers who have given so much of themselves to our hospital and our community over many years.

From those marking early milestones to those celebrating decades of service, we thank you. Your compassion and commitment are the heart of everything we do.

Congratulations to all of our award recipients!

Today we mark Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season in the Christian calendar.

Over the next 40 days leading to Easter, Lent offers a time for reflection, renewal and spiritual growth through prayer, fasting and acts of compassion. It is an invitation to pause, turn inward and prepare our hearts for the hope of Easter 🙏
