It’s taken a couple of days to really process the weekend - and to be honest, we were so busy that we didn’t take many photos. But we had the absolute privilege of being part of something really special.
The Ox is a 24-hour running event where runners complete a 4.2 km lap every hour, on the hour — solo or in teams - to raise money for DIPG research. DIPG is a rare and devastating pediatric brain cancer, with a median survival of just 8 to 12 months. The event also honors Lennox girl Frankie, who passed away in 2022 from DIPG.
Running 100 km isn’t easy. Getting up every hour through the night to run another lap isn’t easy. And for some people, running 30km as part of a team was their version of going all in - and that’s just as huge. The Ox is about showing up, pushing your limits, and doing hard things in honour of kids who never had the choice.
We were lucky to be part of the team of local clinics supporting runners throughout the event. Ryan was there through the heat of the day and into the evening. Jo took over after that (and quickly became known for her knee taping skills), and Alison and BG held strong through the night until Ryan returned at sunrise. It was a long haul - and one we wouldn’t have missed.
Even more special - a few of our own patients were out there on the course. Two of them completed the full 100 km, and another pushed through to an incredible 87 km. Being able to support them not just in clinic, but out there doing something so tough and meaningful, was a real highlight.
It’s a privilege to be part of this community, to support people doing hard things, and to honour the kids and families this event is really about.
