Pain is complex 🤨
🤕 Unfortunately it is not as easy as just getting stronger or just resting. Although these motions may help, a holistic view of your recovery and health should be assessed.

🧘‍♀️Here I have listed some areas which may, as well as many others, influence your pain sensitivity.

😡Are you stressed? Having poor sleep? Or sitting down for most the day? All these things can be causes for pain rather that just pain at a specific area because of daMaGe…

Your simple lower back pain guide! 🤩
Lower back pain sucks and not knowing what to do, sucks even more. So next time you have a back pain flare up know that it is likely OK and your body will naturally heal itself. To help the process stay moving! Look to regress the exercise that you are enjoying and build it back up slowly as you feel comfortable.💪🏻

Although not shown, other areas of pain management such as sleep, hydration, nutrition, stress and many more areas are also highly important. 💡

If you need help with this let me know as I would love to help you! 🫶🏻

BEST EXERCISE FOR BACK PAIN? Finally an answer to a commonly asked question in the clinic!… 🤩
there is no best exercise! 💥
Any exercise that you can tolerate is going to be helpful to your body and lower back. Movement is what is helpful for your body and therefore it is movement that will provide the therapeutic benefit.

Does a weak core = lower back pain? 🤔💭
This idea of poor core activation and poor core strength was shown in a study over 25 years ago. Although the result was modest at best it took over the fitness industry and the notion is still very active today… 🙃

However multiple studies have proven that this notion is a myth and lower back pain is not from; a weak core, nor is poor timing of activation of transverse abdominus! These ideas have been debunked! 👏

So if research is proving that a weak core is not causing lower back pain, the same research also proves that training your core won’t cure your back pain!

However does training your core help back pain? YES 🙌

WHY? Because it is simply a low grade exercise that your lower back can tolerate and rather the therapeutic benefit is related to the benefits of exercise! 👌

So keep moving in a way that your body likes! Don’t stress about your core as this may only lead to more back pain 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

High blood pressure?😅read these slides to get an idea on one way you can help yourself and possibly reverse your hypertension!

This is one paper of many however I use it to emphasis that an exercise modality that is not typically priorities may also have great benefit for a specific outcome!

🎯Have you set goals for 2023? 💯
If so you should read this post and assess whether your goal is appropriate for you! 🤔🧐

“As an example, the process for setting goals in line with Locke and Latham’s (2013) goal-setting theory should involve an initial assessment of necessary moderators: commitment, knowledge, resources, and ability. If all of these moderators are present, a specific, challenging performance goal should be set (e.g., to reach 10,000 steps per day), with careful checking to ensure that the goal is perceived to be challenging/difficult by the individual. If any of these moderators are not present, then a specific, challenging learning goal (e.g., to identify and implement five ways to increase your daily step count) should be set; again with careful checking to ensure that the goal is perceived to be challenging/difficult by the individual (i.e., in terms of the number of strategies the individual needs to identify and implement). If a learning goal is set, the moderators should be monitored, and once commitment, knowledge, resources, and ability are developed, then specific, challenging performance goals should be set instead”

BULLETPROOF YOUR BODY IN 2023: ultimate guide! 🤩
…..
First let’s get clear that you can never completely bulletproof your body - unless you are 50cent. However there are some things you can do to ensure your body is more ready for challenges 💪🏻

#1 sleep well 😴 this is important for ensuring your body has the time and ability to recover from the stressors that you have put it under that day. Sleep is necessary for growth and repair so don’t skip it! Interesting the 2 times I’ve injured myself significantly in my life came from when I was going through periods of getting less than 6 hours of sleep, coincidence? I think not. (It would be one reason that contributed to my injury)

#2 Manage stress 😰 the mind and the body are highly linked! Chemicals can be imbalanced when you are stressed and these negative chemicals may increase your chance of injury. Exercise definitely will help with stress so it is important to listen to your body and mind and choose a level of intensity that is appropriate.

#3 train smart 😎 it is vital to improve your body’s ability by pushing the envelope on what it can handle, however this needs detail management and smart planning. Don’t look to constantly beat your body up by training too hard, periodise your training to allow for rest and progressive overload.

#4 don’t rely on quick fixes 😅
Too much false advertising and offers of quick fixes are very tempting however they offer minimal benefits and are not worth the time, cost or energy. In most situations I would advocate that a walk outside would provide more benefit than these temporary fixes.
