Did you know choline is just as important as folic acid during pregnancy?
Emerging research shows that choline may play a key role in early brain development and could help reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs)—especially when taken alongside folic acid. This is likely due to its role in DNA methylation and supporting healthy gene expression during early pregnancy.
A meta-analysis found that women with lower choline intake had a higher risk of NTDs, while those with higher intakes (around 200–1000 mg/day, with many benefits seen above 500 mg/day) had a lower risk—particularly when combined with adequate folic acid.
Choline has also been linked to long-term cognitive benefits in children, including improved attention and faster information processing.
Despite this, many women still aren’t getting enough choline during pregnancy.
