| WHAT MAKES ONCOLOGY MASSAGE DIFFERENT |

Not all massage is the same — and when it comes to supporting people living with cancer, the difference truly matters.

Oncology Massage is a specialised, evidence-informed approach designed to safely support those undergoing cancer treatment or living with the after effects of it. It’s not just a “gentler massage” — it’s a carefully adapted, clinical practice.

🩵 Here’s how it’s different:
✔️ Trained expertise: Therapists complete specialised education to understand cancer pathology, treatment side effects, and safe touch modifications.
✔️ Individualised care: Each session is adapted for scars, ports, medical devices, fatigue, or pain — every person’s care plan is unique.
✔️ Gentle, therapeutic approach: Pressure, positioning, and duration are all specifically tailored to ensure comfort and safety.
✔️ Emotional and physical support: Beyond physical relief, oncology massage provides calm, connection, and reassurance during an uncertain time.

Oncology massage therapists don’t just “work on the body” — they work with the person, creating space for rest, dignity, and healing connection.

Our students and graduates are proud to deliver care grounded in compassion, safety, and clinical excellence across Australia and New Zealand.

Cancer centres around the country offer oncology massage and clinical experience and research tell us that massage therapy is effective in the care of cancer patients.

Oncology massage is not a cure for cancer, but studies and real-life experience indicate that it does help oncology patients cope with their treatments and conditions, both physically and emotionally. When delivered by a qualified remedial massage therapist or myotherapist, massage can be an effective compliment to other therapies. This is supported by research studies.

Massage therapy has been shown to aid in the treatment of acute pain prevention and management of chronic pain.

Effective management of acute pain is vital in preventing the transition to a costly chronic state, which has negative outcomes for patients and healthcare systems.

Massage can provide significant reductions in acute pain levels, but also improvements in related relaxation, sleep, emotions, recovery, and finally, the healing process.

Q: What is cellulitis?

A: Cellulitis is a bacterial infection that can occur anywhere in the body. People with lymphedema are more susceptible to cellulitis, especially in areas of congestion, because one of the functions of the lymph system is to fight infections by disposing of bacteria, and when lymph drainage is impaired, the infection fighting mechanism is impaired as well.
