Leadership time matters

Taking space to connect outside the clinic helps us step back from the day-to-day and focus on the bigger picture, where we’re heading, how we support our team, and how we continue improving what we offer families.

Grateful for these conversations, shared ideas, and a leadership team committed to moving in the same direction. ✨

Strong clinics don’t happen by accident; they’re built through thoughtful leadership and shared direction.

A flock of Little Birds out learning together 🐦✨

Feeding has always been part of what we do at Little Birds… but we’re big believers that good clinicians never stop learning.

Recently, some of our team attended the SOS Approach to Feeding training and came back with so many valuable insights, practical strategies, and renewed confidence to support our families.

What we love about SOS is how it aligns with our values:
✨ child-led
✨ relationship-based
✨ meeting children where they’re at

Because feeding isn’t just about food…
It’s about trust, regulation, sensory experiences, and connection.

We’re so proud of our team for continuing to invest in their learning, so we can keep showing up with the best, most thoughtful support for our Little Birds families 💛

🌍👂 World Hearing Day

Did you know…

🔹 Around 90 million children aged 5–19 years are living with hearing loss
🔹 Over 60% of childhood hearing loss is preventable through simple, cost-effective public health measures

At Little Birds Allied Health, we see firsthand how hearing plays a vital role in communication, learning, and connection.

But here’s what matters most 👇
✨ Early identification and support can change everything

When hearing differences or ear conditions are picked up early, we can:
• Support communication development
• Reduce impact on learning and education
• Create better long-term outcomes for children

This is why screening and early intervention — especially within schools and child health systems — are so important.

💛 Our approach has always been about:
• Looking at the whole child, not just one skill
• Supporting all communication methods (spoken, AAC, sign, and more)
• Partnering with families and professionals to create meaningful change

Because every child deserves the opportunity to listen, learn, and be heard — in ways that work for them.

At Little Birds, children with hearing impairment are supported by clinicians who are guided by the senior experience of both our Director and Team Leader, each with strong backgrounds in early intervention and hearing impairment. That experience shapes how we work, train, and support one another as a team.

We invest in ongoing training, mentoring, and clinical support so all our clinicians feel confident working with children with hearing differences — not just designated specialists.

This means families receive consistent, informed, and collaborative care, no matter who they’re working with.

Because inclusion, capability, and quality care start from within the team :white_heart:

🎥 Hearing Impairment ≠ One Experience

Deafness and hearing differences look different for every child — and every family.

Some children use spoken language.
Some use Auslan.
Some use AAC.
Many use a multimodal approach that changes over time.

There is no single pathway, no one “right” choice, and no fixed destination.

Our role is to support language access, communication, and connection in ways that align with each child’s needs and each family’s values, including respect for Deaf identity and community.

Because communication isn’t one-size-fits-all 🤍

COMMON MYTHS ABOUT DEAFNESS & HEARING DIFFERENCES 👂❌

Let’s clear up a few misconceptions that still come up far too often 👇

Myth 1:
🗣️ “All deaf children use the same communication method.”
➡️ There is no one-size-fits-all. Deaf children may use spoken language, Auslan, AAC, sign-supported speech, or a combination — and this can change over time.

Myth 2:
🗣️ “Hearing aids or cochlear implants instantly fix all hearing-related difficulties.”
➡️ These devices provide access to sound, not instant understanding. Listening, especially in noise, still requires effort, support, and time.

Myth 3:
🗣️ “Auditory habilitation only focuses on speech.”
➡️ True support goes beyond speech, it includes language, listening, communication, participation, identity, and wellbeing.

Myth 4:
🗣️ “Families must choose one pathway — oral or sign.”
➡️ Families don’t have to choose sides. Many children thrive with multimodal communication, and pathways can evolve.

✨ The truth:
Support should follow the child and the family, not the other way around.

When we move away from rigid pathways and myths, we create space for access, inclusion, and authentic communication.

🖼️ Why Visuals Matter

Visuals aren’t just “pretty pictures” — they’re powerful communication tools.

Visual supports are used in AAC systems to give people ways to express themselves beyond speech. They also help children understand language and support expressive communication using words, signs, or symbols.

Visual schedules support following instructions, building independence, and reducing anxiety by clearly showing what’s coming next.

Social stories use visuals to explain social situations, changes, and expectations in a predictable and supportive way.

Visuals can also:
• bridge language gaps
• support self-regulation
• encourage attention and engagement
• help with transitions

There’s no one-size-fits-all.
The best visuals are the ones that match how a child learns, understands, and communicates. 💛

🖼️ Choosing the Right Visuals for Every Child

At Little Birds, we know that visuals are more than just pictures, they’re tools that help children communicate, learn, and feel confident.

From Boardmaker symbols to LessonPix custom visuals, from familiar AAC system pictures to real-life photos, each type of visual has its own strengths and limitations. Some are great for routines, others for personalisation, and some make concepts instantly relatable.

The key? There’s no one-size-fits-all. Every child is unique, and the best visuals are the ones that fit how they understand, engage, and communicate. 💛

Swipe through our carousel to see the pros and cons of each visual type, and why choosing the right one matters.

Visuals are powerful.

We use visuals to tell stories that help children prepare for what’s coming, thereby reducing anxiety and building predictability.

We use them as checklists and schedules to support understanding, independence, and follow-through.

For many children, visuals aren’t just helpful, they’re a game changer.

They make expectations clear.
They support emotional regulation.

They reduce uncertainty and overwhelm.

When language feels hard, visuals step in and do the talking.

Last week, our leadership team hit pause on day-to-day operations to come together for an afternoon of learning, reflection, and connection. ✨️

We explored Human Design with Talia, a more intuitive approach to understanding ourselves and how we lead. It was a space to reflect on our personalities, learning styles, self-perception, and how we approach problem-solving.

The biggest takeaway? There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to lead — just different ways!
When we understand and respect these differences, they don’t create friction; they create balance. They help us complement each other’s strengths and build a stronger, more cohesive leadership team.
Grateful for the openness, curiosity, and connection we shared during this time. ❤️
