Are your vaccinations up to date? (Yours and your family's?)

It's one of those things that's easy to let slip — a missed childhood booster, an adult vaccine you didn't realise you were due for, or travel plans that suddenly need a Yellow Fever certificate. Life gets busy, and immunisation schedules don't always stay top of mind.

Here's what a lot of people don't realise: catch-ups aren't just for kids. Adults can fall behind too — whether it's a whooping cough booster before a new grandchild arrives, a shingles vaccine after turning 50, or updating your flu and COVID-19 protection ahead of winter.

And if you're planning a trip overseas? Travel vaccines can be surprisingly complex depending on your destination. It's worth having that conversation with your GP well before you fly, not the week before.

At Bangor Medical centre, we carry a comprehensive range of vaccines — from the standard childhood immunisation schedule, to adult boosters for chronic disease patients and elderly patients, to travel-specific vaccinations including Yellow Fever.

Your GP can review your immunisation history, identify any gaps, and map out what's needed — whether that's one catch-up appointment or a staged plan before travel.

No referral needed. Just book an immunisation appointment with your GP and bring along any vaccination records you have (your MyGov immunisation history statement is a great starting point).

Getting older doesn't mean getting less attention — it means deserving more of it.

Dr Shahzadi Nadia is a Consultant Geriatrician seeing patients at our Excelsia Specialist Centre, Bangor on Fridays. She focuses on the things that matter most to older adults and their families: staying independent, preventing falls, managing conditions like osteoporosis and dementia, and navigating the emotional side of ageing, including depression.

What stands out about Dr Nadia is her approach — she looks at the whole person, not just a list of symptoms. She's trained across hospital and community settings, and brings a warmth to her consultations that puts both patients and their loved ones at ease.

She also speaks Pashto, Urdu and Hindi, so if English isn't your first language, she may be able to connect with you in yours.

If you have a parent or family member who could benefit from specialist geriatric care close to home, a referral from your GP is all you need to get started.

MYTH: "Private medical practices are too expensive — I'll always pay more than at a bulk billing clinic."

FACT: Many private practices, including ours, operate under mixed billing. That means a large number of patients are still bulk billed — including children aged 15 and under, concession card holders, and DVA card holders. If you've been a regular patient with your GP, there's a good chance your routine consultations are already covered.

So what does "mixed billing" actually mean for you? It means the practice can invest in longer appointment times, a wider range of on-site services, and continuity with a doctor who knows your history — while still keeping care accessible for those who need it most.

The gap fee that some patients pay isn't a premium for the sake of it. It reflects the reality that Medicare rebates haven't kept pace with the cost of delivering thorough, unhurried care. That small investment often means you're not being squeezed into a 6-minute slot — your GP has the time to actually listen, investigate, and follow up properly.

Before assuming a private practice is out of reach, it's worth asking the team about your individual billing. You might be surprised.

World Bipolar Day

Bipolar disorder is a complex mental health condition — but with the right support, it can be managed.

Care isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s ongoing, structured, and collaborative.

At Bangor Medical Centre, we support patients through:

✔️ GP-led mental health care plans
✔️ Medication monitoring and review
✔️ Referrals to psychiatrists and psychologists
✔️ Long consultations for continuity and support

The first step is often just a conversation.

If you’re struggling or need support, book in — you don’t have to manage it alone.

As the seasons change, so can your health.

Autumn often brings an increase in allergy symptoms and asthma flare-ups, while also marking the lead-up to flu season.

If you experience hay fever, asthma, or respiratory symptoms, this is a good time to check in with your GP and ensure your management plan is up to date.

Your GP can help with:

• Reviewing asthma control and action plans
• Discussing allergy management strategies
• Preparing for the cooler months and respiratory illnesses
• Assessing any changes in symptoms

It’s also a good time to start thinking ahead — flu vaccinations will be available soon, and planning early can help you stay protected through the season.

If you’ve noticed worsening symptoms or want to get ahead of the season, consider booking an appointment with your GP.

Purple Day 💜 (Epilepsy Awareness)

Epilepsy is more common than many realise — and often misunderstood.

Awareness isn’t just about recognition. It’s about support, management, and continuity of care.

At Specialist Medical Services Group, we support patients with:

✔️ GP-led care and ongoing monitoring
✔️ Medication management and care plans
✔️ Coordination with neurologists and specialists
✔️ Support for lifestyle, safety and long-term wellbeing

With the right care, many people with epilepsy live full, independent lives.

If you or a loved one needs support, start with a conversation.

With Bowel Cancer Awareness Month approaching, it’s a good time to think about bowel screening and digestive health.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, but early detection through screening can significantly improve outcomes. Many adults will receive a National Bowel Screening Test kit, which can be completed easily at home.

If you’ve noticed ongoing digestive symptoms — such as changes in bowel habits, persistent bloating, or abdominal discomfort — it’s important to discuss this with your GP.

Your GP can review your symptoms, discuss screening options, and where appropriate arrange further assessment with our gastroenterology specialist for more complex digestive concerns.

Early conversations and screening play an important role in protecting long-term digestive health.

If you’re due for screening or have digestive concerns, consider speaking with your GP or asking about referral to our gastroenterology service.
