Ever notice how you can overreact to something small, feel completely drained after social interaction, or shut down the moment conflict appears?

That’s not your personality, it’s your nervous system shifting between states. From feeling grounded and connected…to anxious and on edge… to numb or wanting to withdraw.

Your body moves through these states based on perceived safety - which is often outside of your conscious awareness (you don't even know it!)

The goal isn’t to avoid stress in life. Stress is part of being human. The goal is to build the capacity to return to safety, building regulation and resilience.

Everyone has their own unique experience of health fluctuations. We don't subscribe to a 'positivity only' approach, around here the full gamut of emotions is welcome. Yet most days there's laughter in the studio and clinic. People expressing gratitude, savouring the small joys, embracing life and each other.

We feel deeply privileged to learn every day from our clients about how they find glimmers of hope and connection amidst the hard stuff of serious illness.

If you are seeking a gentle space to reflect, the doors of this sanctuary are open for you.

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day.

A day to recognise the strength, resilience, compassion and leadership of women in our community and around the world.

At Surya Health, we are constantly inspired by the women, non-binary folk and allies who walk through our doors. Humans balancing their own challenges, addressing their own biases, while also supporting each other.

International Women’s Day is also a reminder that while progress has been made, there is still important work to do in creating equal opportunities, amplifying voices, and ensuring safety, respect and fairness for all genders.

Imagine a gender equal world.

We are so grateful to Sita for these kind words:

"I have been practicing yoga here for years, the studio is such a beautiful, peaceful space. The teachers are inclusive and supportive. I also cannot recommend their grief and cancer/health diagnosis support counseling enough - second to none. ❤️"

According to the European seasonal calendar we flip and use for convenience in temperate Australia, the start of March signals a shift from summer into autumn. Perhaps you have noticed the daylight hours shortening. So far there's no end to the warmth, although some storms have rolled through recently, breaking up the long dry season. And unlike the home countries of our European ancestors, we don't expect to see the bushland dropping it's leaves in anything approximating 'fall'.

Something a contemplative practice such as yoga or meditation can bring, is a greater felt sense of attunement with the ever changing natural world and the rhythms of the earth we rest upon. From this perspective, the insights of indigenous people resonate more strongly, whereby we continue to experience Bunuru, the hottest season, characterised by white flowers.

Here in Banksia Grove, we are on Mooro country, surrounded by abundant, stunning white Marri and Jarrah blossoms. On our walks and trail runs in this area, we see Macrozamia cones emerging and ripening from green to red, and the soft yellow-white flowers we know as candlestick Banksia can be seen as you enter the Surya Health driveway.

We are grateful for the birdsong and the cooling breezes that fill the studio during our classes this time of year.

You're invited to experience yoga in nature for yourself: https://suryahealth.punchpass.com/classes

Why do we promote nature-bathing?

In philosophy, qualia refers to the subjective qualities of lived experience - the greenness of green, the warmth of sunlight on your skin, the feeling of calm that hits before you can explain it. It’s the part of consciousness that can’t be fully explained, even though it’s deeply real.

Being outdoors is a masterclass in qualia.

Studies have measured effects of nature-bathing including lower cortisol, improved attention and better sleep. The qualitative aspect is how you feel in that moment: the way a breeze helps to give your mind clarity, how trees subtly slow your inner dialogue, how natural light makes the world seem more comforting.

Sometimes all you need to do is pay attention to how it feels to be alive... and go where that feeling gets clearer.

Healing happens when we’re supported to move towards the wounded parts of ourselves with loving kindness and radical acceptance🌿

Our built-in safety mechanisms try to protect us from feeling pain on every level. Sometimes avoidance and distraction is smart and adaptive. But over time, those reactions tend to shrink our lives, making it harder to live with freedom and joy.

Eastern wisdom traditions and western psychology increasingly align in suggesting that we can recover and even experience post-traumatic growth when we have the right support to turn towards rather than away from hard things.

You may already have developed inner resources that allow you to do this, yet even so, compassionate guidance matters, especially during and after cancer. When you’re not carrying it all alone, clarity returns and choices feel steadier.

If this resonates, it may be a gentle reminder that you don’t have to navigate healing alone.

Our Story

From our very first experiences with yoga, both of us knew that this would be an important aspect of our lives. The ability to tune in to the felt sensations, to slow the busy mind, and to explore movement in subtle and interesting ways intrigued us. For many years our meditation practice was central, along with attending regular yoga classes, and developing our skills through education and training in naturopathy and yoga teaching (Chandrika), massage, caring, social work and counselling (Satyam). As we have matured into our 40’s we’ve both achieved plenty of our career goals; being able to work in cancer and palliative care settings, Masters degrees in our respective fields, and now Chandrika is embarking on her PhD in integrative oncology. What we have come to understand is just how important keeping mentally and physically active, strong, and supple is in order to live out our dreams. The emphasis in our practices has gradually shifted to what we feel is ‘intelligent asana’, a mindful approach to moving and being. There’s room for many different approaches to yoga to suit different people during different phases of life. We hope that our small studio (max 10 students) is an inviting space where we can offer you the tools of yoga and support you to find the yoga that works for you. Each week during term time we have 5 classes on the schedule - dynamic vinyasa on Monday nights and Saturday mornings, meditative yin on Tuesday nights, therapeutic hatha on Wednesday evenings - ideal if you’re dealing with challenges on any level, and women’s wellness hatha on Thursday evenings to honour the particular phases of women’s lives including pre and post natal care.
