Navigating milk feeds and starting solids 🤎
This is one of my most FAQ’s. Should I breastfeed/offer bottle before or after food?
Before your mini turns one, milk is still their most important meal. Therefore, it is important to offer milk before solids. If you wanted a rough guide on time, I would generally say to offer the milk when your baby wakes from a nap, then offer food ABOUT half an hour after so they still have some time to digest their food and can be monitored for reactions before their next nap (especially when introducing the top allergenic foods). Keyword is ABOUT, please don’t stress about exact timings each day.
It is important to remember that babies don’t yet associate food with hunger. It can be common to try and offer the food first when you think they might be hungry so that they eat it up. But… this can lead to a cranky hangry baby, and like I said, milk is more important so you don’t want them to then be too full to have their milk if you offer food first.
When your baby reaches around one, breastmilk and formula are no longer the most important nutrition, however breastfeeding to two or beyond still has so many benefits for your toddler and you mama. By this time, it is important to focus on a healthy varied diet.
