What is the best method of starting solids?

If you ask me, my answer would be “baby led feeding”. And no, that’s not the same as baby led weaning (BLW). I believe that the best way is the one you feel most comfortable with, and to let your baby lead the way!

There are pro’s and con’s to both purées and finger foods, so I think it’s important to inform yourself on these so you can choose the best option for your family. I want to also note that if you choose to start with purée, it’s important to offer finger foods by no later than 9 months.

Did you start with purée, finger foods or a combination of the two? 🥣 🥕

If you are yet to start solids, come along to one of our starting solids workshops so you can feel confident in making the right choice for your family. Can’t join a workshop? DM me “solids” and I’ll send you the link to the starting solids ebook which includes everything you need to know.

Being a mama can bring us so much joy, but it can also bring us so much stress.

When our bodies face a lot of stress over time, the adrenal glands in the body produce excess cortisol.

The adrenal glands play an important role in helping us manage our stress and maintain good health.

When we experience chronic stress, our adrenal glands may no longer be able to respond properly and can lead to adrenal fatigue, which can effect our physical, emotional and mental health.

Excess cortisol can also negatively impact your mini through pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Navigating milk feeds and starting solids 🤎

This is one of my most FAQ’s. Should I breastfeed/offer bottle before or after food?

Before your mini turns one, milk is still their most important meal. Therefore, it is important to offer milk before solids. If you wanted a rough guide on time, I would generally say to offer the milk when your baby wakes from a nap, then offer food ABOUT half an hour after so they still have some time to digest their food and can be monitored for reactions before their next nap (especially when introducing the top allergenic foods). Keyword is ABOUT, please don’t stress about exact timings each day.

It is important to remember that babies don’t yet associate food with hunger. It can be common to try and offer the food first when you think they might be hungry so that they eat it up. But… this can lead to a cranky hangry baby, and like I said, milk is more important so you don’t want them to then be too full to have their milk if you offer food first.

When your baby reaches around one, breastmilk and formula are no longer the most important nutrition, however breastfeeding to two or beyond still has so many benefits for your toddler and you mama. By this time, it is important to focus on a healthy varied diet.
