🫧 🚦These may just look like traffic light bubbles 🚦🫧 but as a community therapists it’s vital that we constantly reevaluate our interventions are evidence based . For families trying to navigate all the ‘therapy’ options out there, this paper is a wonderful resource that summarise what interventions have the strongest evidence and are actually worth it! 🚙 So many hours are spent in my second office driving to clients homes, childcare’s or schools. 🚙 Apart from planning toilet stops, speaking to colleagues and preventing snacks from falling into the black hole between my handbrake and chair 😝 , I’ve been loving doing some professional development listening to the following podcasts! is great for clinicians wanting to hear the most up-to-date research and TheraBytes podcasts are smaller segments for families / carers to understand the research world. Also super excited to be attending the Rehab For Kids Conference next year! Working in the community there is the risk of isolation and stagnation so there needs to be continual learning and accountability with up to date research & tertiary centres! Still needing to learn however how to STOP dropping food into that black hole 😣

HAPPY 🌎 PHYSIOTHERAPY DAY!!

The focus for this year’s World PT Day is low back pain, and the crucial contribution Physiotherapist makes to keeping people well, mobile and independent!

A staggering 619 million people worldwide suffered from back pain in 2020 and by 2050 that number is expected to reach 843 million!

The prevalence of back pain is higher in caregivers of children needing assistance with transfers. Results of studies suggest that physical and psychological factors both contribute to the presence of back pain.

Literature recommend avoiding caring-related harmful physical activities, maintaining body weight within a healthy range, and increasing knowledge for accurate lifting/handling techniques can be helpful to prevent lower back pain in parents of children with a disability.

Also a recent randomized control trial from Australia called the WalkBack trial has shown a regular walking program can reduce the reoccurrence of back pain.

So to all those amazing caregivers out there, take the time to go for regular walks and remember to lift well! Swipe for tips!

🌷Welcome to Holland🌷
By: Emily Perl Kingsley
I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It’s like this…
When you’re going to have a baby, it’s like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It’s all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, “Welcome to Holland.”
“Holland?!?” you say. “What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I’m supposed to be in Italy. All my life I’ve dreamed of going to Italy.”
But there’s been a change in the flight plan. They’ve landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven’t taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It’s just a different place.
So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.
It’s just a different place. It’s slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you’ve been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they’re all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say “Yes, that’s where I was supposed to go. That’s what I had planned.”
And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away...because the loss of that dream is a very, very significant loss.

But...if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things... about Holland.
