After months of blood, sweat and paper cuts Inclusive-AF is proud to roll out and is now selling our first online course (written and presented by Jackson Trout) on our LMS, and what better place to begin our mission for a more inclusive future, than in the past.

Why?

The more we talk about disability and inclusion the more we draw upon historical events, and we realised that this is a history that is largely unknown.

So we are here to give people a crash course on some of the key events and people that have fought for the improved rights and visibility of people with disability in Australia.

People like Geoff Bell and John Roarty... don't know who they are?

Exactly.

This course is perfect for anybody working in or around disability who would love to better understand the historical experiences and perspectives. It's a tough read at times, but we believe that unless we acknowledge the past we won't learn from it.

Welcome to a Brief History of Disability in Colonial Australia - available on our website now!

Enrolling in this course broadens your understanding of historical narratives, fostering empathy and awareness of the lived experiences of people with disabilities. This knowledge will support you as an advocate for social justice and opens diverse career opportunities in fields like education, heal...

We're loving the conversations around employing people with a disability. From specific employment sites (Shoutout theField.jobs!) and increased workplace accessibility - it's awesome. But, we've been spending BILLIONS on this since the mid 80s via Disability Employment Services (DES) Providers. So how's it gone?

The latest statistics show that the employment rate for people with disability is nearly half that of people without: 48% and 80% respectively (AIHW 2019). In fact, the employment rate of people with severe or profound disability has decreased since the mid-naughties. 48% employment is higher than the US and many countries, but falls short of the numbers being achieved in Europe and most developed countries. For example Sweden is at 63%.

We're not saying it's a simple or easy fix, but long-term meaningful employment is a deeply personal and individual consideration. Not a 1-1 exercise in plugging a gap. In his latest blog, Jackson Trout retells his experience with a DES provider. From getting ripped off by employers and having to take them to court, the anxiety of getting dumped into stressful jobs at the last minute to being told he can't leave until he fills out enough applications; you can start to see the issues. In fact; he's recounted that not once was he asked what he wants to do.

He's a brilliant artist and nobody bothered to find out.

We're not looking for smoke with DES providers, but rather want to bring to light the importance of individualised support and a strength-based approach to helping someone find their career, instead of a job.

"For many months I would have to go once a week and fill out an employment form, which basically meant I had to look up an employment site, make 10-20 applications, and write them down to prove that I had done it. Only then would I be allowed to leave."

Every now and then you come across someone uniquely awesome that not enough people are aware of - one such person is James Thomas Wrench (1868-1899).

In his latest blog Jackson details what makes this artist genuinely inspirational!

👉

I’m currently reading Lorna Hallan’s history of disability in Australia, and I’ve just come across this remarkable anecdote. In the late nineteenth century, there lived a man by the name of James Thomas Wrench, who, despite being born with a severe physical disability, was still able to achiev...
