Looking at better ways to deliver health care! 💡

One of the main sessions at last week’s was the “Models of Care” panel.

They gave lots of useful and practical ideas to help make health care better for everyone.

NAIDOC Week has just finished, and we’re thinking about one of the most important talks from our recent conference. It was called “Culturally Safe and Inclusive Approaches.”

This talk was about making sure First Nations people with intellectual disability feel safe and respected when they use health services.

We’re very grateful to the amazing speakers who shared their knowledge and stories.

By listening, learning, and taking action, we can help improve healthcare and continue to support and strengthen First Nations' voices.

What a great session!

One of the best parts of last week's was the "Let's Get Loud!" workshop. It was run by our Learn and Lead Group.

The workshop was fun. It helped people with intellectual disability speak up about their healthcare needs.

It reminded us that people with lived experience are the most important voices when it comes to making change.

Thank you to the Learn and Lead Group for sharing your skills and energy!

July is Disability Pride Month! ♿️

At the Centre, we believe that pride and self-advocacy are essential for achieving better health for people with intellectual disability. Our conference was a testament to this, guided by our principle of "working together every step of the way".

We saw firsthand how pride in identity empowers people to lead conversations about their own health and drive meaningful change.

Let's continue to champion the proud, powerful voices of the disability community, this month and always!

Our conference last week was amazing!

For two days, people came together to share ideas, learn new things, and meet people, all to help make healthcare better for people with intellectual disability.

Thank you to everyone who spoke, everyone who came along, and everyone who helped make it happen.

It was great to see so many people at the conference. But the work isn’t over. We will keep working together, every step of the way, to get good healthcare for every person with intellectual disability in Australia.

We asked everyone at the Conference to share what working together every step of the way means to them. Thanks to Paul Telling from The Visual Storytellers for bringing those ideas to life in this artwork, created live at the Conference.

This week we are celebrating NAIDOC Week. This is an important week for the Centre, and for all Australians.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. This year marks 50 years of the week-long celebrations, and the theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, celebrates achievements of the past and the bright future ahead.

To mark NAIDOC Week, we will have a special Acknowledgement of Country workshop for Centre staff, and there will be lots of activities in communities across Australia too.

At the Centre we are very focused on improving access to culturally safe, inclusive and trauma-informed health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with intellectual disability. We are especially appreciative of the efforts and expertise of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and our First Nations Advisory Committee who guide and shape the Centre’s approach.
