Excited to share that my practice Four Seasons Dietetics have partnered up with Sydney Adventist Hospital to provide outpatient dietitian services at the SAN. It’s an honour to have this opportunity to collaborate with such a great organisation and having worked here for the past three years as the inpatient Clinical Dietitian - it’s also exciting to extend my nutrition support for patients beyond the ward rooms.

I will be seeing predominately cancer patients but am also experienced in providing nutrition care for patients pre/post op, with gastrointestinal conditions, stoma care, enteral nutrition, malnutrition and more.

I am available to see patients every Thursday in the Integrated Cancer Centre. Please get in touch if you would like more information!

Our top five vegan yoghurts based on yummyness.

1) The Collective: This takes top place as it is the best in closely mimicking the taste and texture of cow's yoghurt. It comes in many delicious flavours too!
2) Cocobella: Another yoghurt that mimics cow's yoghurt, but falls off due to the slight coconutty taste. This may be overpowering for some people.
3) Chobani: The texture is grainy but the flavour is there. Bonus points for being fortified with calcium!
4) Plantitude (Woolworths): Can't go wrong with homebrand. However, like Cocobella, it falls short on taste. It's the most affordable plant-based yoghurt on this list.
5) Wise Bunny: It has the same problems as the oat-based yoghurts (grainy texture). It makes for a lighter snack in comparison to the coconut-based yoghurts.

Apart from soluble and insoluble fibre, did you know there is a THIRD TYPE of dietary fibre called RESISTANT STARCH (RS)??

As more emerging research on the nutrition benefits of resistant starch (RS) in gut health, here is a quick crash course on what it is and where you can find it.

Currently there is limited data to estimate how much RS the average population consumes. However it is estimate it is below the recommended levels as the average Australian do not eat enough dietary fibre generally. As mentioned in this post, RS levels are also influenced by processing methods - so many modern processed foods are generally low in RS.

CSIRO suggests that we should be aiming for 15-20 grams of RS per day to support good bowel health and is FOUR TIMES greater than the current typical Australian diet.

Can you identify foods with RS in your diet? What are some ways you can include more RS? Let me know in the comments!

Whether you're cutting down on meat for ethical, environmental or health reasons (or a combination of the three), going more plant-based doesn't have to be difficult. Cutting out all animal products for many people is often not a realistic goal as it is unsustainable to make huge changes at one time. Meatless Mondays is a great way to test out a sustainable plant-based diet. To get you started on your journey, check out the post on how to substitute your meat with plants.

HEALTHY TAKEAWAY FOOD TIPS - although I do encourage home cooked foods, it is possible to incorporate takeaway foods on a gut loving diet. How often do you eat out?

I’d always ask my clients WHY they choose takeaway foods. Common responses include
- time poor
- lack of cooking skills
- just love yummy food
- convenience
- social purposes (because everyone else is buying takeaway)

We work on tackling these core barriers whether it be meal prep ideas, convenient meal options that can be prepped at home or skill building. But I also work with them so I’m not removing the enjoyment of eating out. Here are some tips I often share.

Yes there are ways apart from going low FODMAP to manage your IBS symptoms! Evidence has shown that some high FODMAP foods can contribute to IBS symptoms however this is not the case for EVERYONE. In fact, some people with IBS can tolerate all the FODMAP groups which reiterates that there is no one size fits all solution. There are also many reasons to NOT GO low FODMAP:

- Time consuming: all three phases of the diet can take up to 3-6 months to complete, which may not be suitable if your a time poor or a busy professional
- Difficult to comply: Going low FODMAP foods means you are going to restrict some common foods such as garlic, onion, wheat.
- If you are pregnant or lactating: hormones can influence FODMAP tolerance, so the results can vary
- If you have history of eating disorders: Low FODMAP is an elimination diet and is not recommended for individuals with a history of ED
- If you are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition: if you are losing weight or have prolonged periods of inadequate nutrition - restricting your diet can put you at higher health risk

Before going low FODMAP, check out these other dietary strategies first and see if it can help improve your IBS symptoms

"Eating healthy" for good gut health sounds simple, but in reality it is difficult to do because we do not want to give up the foods we enjoy or the suggestions you have come across just seems unrealistic to achieve. If this is you then I have good news, rather than thinking what foods you SHOULD BE removing from your diet, start considering what you can ADD and work with your preferred foods. I have some tips or you, slide to find out more.

Does any of these seem realistic to you? A lot of these options are also kid-friendly and very easy to implement without adding extra cooking or prep time.
