As psychologists, we are always inspired by the ways people find meaning, connection and resilience. Recently at Danebank High School’s Year 12 exhibition, Annie created a video project on the mental health benefits of volunteering.
Annie’s work stood out not only for its creativity and technical ex*****on but also for its heartfelt message: that giving back to others can also nurture our own wellbeing. This kind of youth-led innovation is a wonderful reminder that young people are already linking everyday activities with positive mental health practices.
Her project not only showcases impressive creativity and technical skill, it also delivers an important message: when we give back to others, we nurture our own wellbeing. Volunteering offers connection, perspective and purpose, three elements that are essential to mental health.
From a psychological perspective, this also aligns with Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), particularly the ACCEPTS skills, which encourage us to manage overwhelming emotions through healthy distractions like contributing and meaningful activities.
It’s remarkable to see such insight and innovation from someone so young, and a wonderful reminder that acts of service can strengthen both community and self. We wish Annie every success in the near future as she continues to grow her skills and creativity.
