Caroline Bristow Wig Library

Caroline Bristow Wig Library The Caroline Bristow Wig Library is a service available to those in the Riverland & Mallee Regions that allows them to hire wigs during and after treatment

Caroline Bristow, known to most people as Carol, was diagnosed with cancer in 2013. While she was determined not to let this stop her from doing everything she loved to do, the effects of the chemotherapy are shocking and can provide a hurdle to get over...how do I go out without looking like I am sick. Carol swore she wouldn't use wigs during her treatment but she eventually gave them a go and never looked back. She loved the fact she could go out feeling and looking her best despite all that she had going on. Carol then decided she would love for this to become an option for everybody regardless of whether they could afford the sometimes hefty cost of buying a wig. So, after seeing an example elsewhere, she decided that the Riverland and Mallee needed a Wig Library. A place where people could come and try on wigs, get advice and hire them out for a low fee and go home feeling the best they can. Her vision saw the beginnings of the Wig Library in Barmera and with the news of a steep deterioration of Carol's health, the committee decided to aptly name it the Caroline Bristow Wig Library to ensure that her vision will continue on after she was gone. We said goodbye to Carol in February and we hope that this legacy will provide some small comfort for her family and serve as a reminder of what a passionate, lively and unstoppable force she was in everything she did. We have some extraordinarily generous donations so far for which we are so grateful for but, as is always the case, there is always room for more generosity!! If you can help in anyway we would love to hear from you!! The Caroline Bristow Wig Library is located in hospital in Barmera adjacent to Women's Health. You can contact Ellen on 0437 819 125

A huge thank you to the Waikerie Football Club who held a fundraiser and donated $3300 to the Wig Library. We are so grateful to Community Groups as without them we would not be able to provide the service and support Riverland people during a difficult time

Not long now to our 10th Anniversary Event, please book your tickets by the 31st March

Lots has been happening with the Wig Library lately, we have moved location, still in the Barmera Hospital but to a larger, brighter space. It is also hard to believe that it has been almost 10 years since the library started! So we are holding a special event, so please come along and help us celebrate such an amazing achievement. The fashion parade will be showcasing some of our beautiful wigs and some Renmark Op Shop Fashions. We are also excited to announce that the Wig Library was able to raise funds to purchase a SOZO Machine, with a launch happening on the night. If you would like to purchase a ticket please contact;
Lyn Wilkinson on 0428815016 or
Lynette Nitschke on 0428475618

Huge shout out of thanks to our Wig Library Volunteers: Lyn Wilkinson, Peggy Inch, Liz Florance, Ellen Traeger and Robin Foley for organising a working bee to sew name labels on to all the wigs as well as reorganising how we store them as we were running out of room because of everyone's kind donations! It was a big job and it is truly appreciated

We often get messages about people wanting to donate their hair, unfortunately we are unable to accept it. There are a few places that we suggest donating to including if your hair isn't long enough or is coloured.
This is the link to Hair with Heart which tells how to cut your hair and how to donate, there was a FAQ re if it isn’t long enough for a wig where you can send it to:
https://hairwithheart.variety.org.au/resources

My ponytail is less than 35.5cm (14in), can I still donate it?
The minimum length requirement for all hair donations is 35.5cm/14 inches. 1-2cm shorter is okay to donate, but the longer the donation the better! If you’ve got to wait a little longer for your hair to reach that length, you could consider setting up your fundraising page now! It’s a great way to keep you motivated whilst you patiently wait for your hair to grow.
If you need to chop your hair now, and it’s shorter than 35.5cm/14in, we’d recommend sending it to Sustainable Salons who accepts donations of ponytails from 20cm.
You can post your ponytails to:
Sustainable Salons
GPO Box 322
Sydney NSW 2001

You can also donate to Kids With Cancer Foundation
How to Donate Hair
‘Ella Wigmakers’ will accept all types of hair. The hair needs to be a minimum length of 20cm clean and dry. Before cutting, tie up multiple pony tails (where you can) with elastic bands down the length of the pony tail. Plaiting works too. Then cut above the top elastic band and post in a plastic zip bag inside an addressed parcel to:
Ella Wigmakers, PO Box 9200, Wyoming NSW 2250.
Please Include a note to let Ella Wigmakers know the hair is for Wigs 4 Kids.

If you are cutting your hair and would like it to benefit a young child, Kids with Cancer Foundation and Ella Wigmakers can assist you. You can turn your cut or shave into a wonderful fundraiser for the kids and it’s a win-win.
