One rainy day back in 2014, I drove out to rural WA to look at a horse. My confidence was at an all time low after a bad accident with my heart horse Midnight. But I couldn't get back on the horse (as said horse was broken...) so I needed a new one.
I stumbled across a horse on gumtree that seemed to fit the bill... he was a thoroughbred x stock horse, in his mid teens and had played polocrosse (which is my comfort zone... odd for a nervous rider I know 😂).
When I arrived at the property, a young girl was riding around on him and I could see he was a nice type. I nervously hopped on and walked around, but the real swing vote was how he reacted to the polocrosse racket... ears pricked up and he tracked the ball really well.. I could tell he had some very well established buttons!
So, I took him home on trial.. took him to the paddock, took his head collar off and let him go. Then I tried to catch him to put a cotton sheet on... well lets just say it was lucky that it wasn't a big paddock! He wouldn't let me get within arms reach of him! In the end, I let Midnight into the paddock, and he drafted him into a corner and with the help of a few carrots he let me put the headcollar back on. He was very wary and very untrusting of people and had a cautious look in his eye that said "I don't trust easy" 😢
So, we took it slowly. Even at that stage I was dabbling with combinations of supplements, so I firstly rehabilitated his mind and gut with ingredients that later became our Help my Horse Calming Bars and Equine Digestion Bars. And then I worked on our connection, getting him physically stronger (he hadn't been ridden consistently for years) and building trust... all on the ground for 6 months.
He taught me a lot... pressure was an absolute no no, and it was always a case of ask don't tell. But when I finally got on him again 6 months later, it was worth every second. He was happy, willing, focused and connected and I trusted him as much as he trusted me ❤️ A relationship that came in very handy when it came to getting my mojo back after have kids. He will always be 'the horse who got me back on the horse' and I love him to the moon and back ❤️ Now at age 30, everyday that he is still with us is a blessing ❤️
