HOW TO: Sit, stand, walk & sleep! đŸȘ‘ 🧍 đŸš¶đŸ›Œ
Sounds easy right? We do this every day! But believe it or not, there are a few tricks to make sure that you’re maintaining a healthy spine whilst doing these everyday tasks.
SIT:
When sitting whether it be for short or long periods, have both feet evenly on the ground with your legs and knees at a 90 degree right angle. Sit up tall and straight with your shoulders up and back. If you are sitting for long periods of time, attempt to get up and move every 30 min - 1 hour.

STAND:
Stand evenly on two feet. Try and avoid favouring one leg or hip. When standing for long periods, try to walk around and keep movement throughout your feet and legs.

WALK:
Take notice of the way you walk. Is it even? Do you have stiffness or pain in any of your body when you walk? You could have underlying issues which your body compensates for when you walk. Walk evenly on both feet and if you notice a limp or favouring of any kind, contact your chiropractor!

SLEEP:
There are few different ways to have a good sleep. The most ideal sleep posture for a healthy spine is sleeping on your side with the correct pillow height. You can also place a pillow between your knees to take the pressure off your hips and pelvis. Side sleeping isn’t for everyone - sleeping on your back is also okay with the correct pillow height.
If you’re unsure if the way you sleep is the best for you - consult your chiropractor for more advice!

What is spinal health? Why is it important to maintain a healthy spine?
One of our favourite ways of describing the spine is when we refer to it as your ‘Suit of Armour’. Your spine is the armour that houses and protects your spinal cord and nervous system.
The nervous system is the master control system for your entire body. It controls the way you function, adapt, think, feel and express. It is the powerhouse of EVERYTHING you do.
So what happens when our spinal health is compromised?
If the spine is ‘SUBLUXATED’, that means the nervous system is not functioning at its most optimal level. As your nervous system is the message sender and receiver for all your body’s functions, this can directly impact organ function (autonomic nervous system).
A healthy spine and nervous system, free from subluxation, is central to the optimum health and wellbeing of body and mind.

This May, we are celebrating the Spine. In the first week of May it’s national Spine Week and at the end of May, the Australian Chiropractic Association (ACA) launches their official celebrations of Spinal Health Week. So really, there is no better month to educate the world on all things SPINE and NERVOUS SYSTEM.
This is music to our ears! Here at Chiropractic Life, our main focus and goal is to optimise the spine and nervous system of our practice members to get them functioning at the optimal capacity.

The human body and brain is SO SMART, it is literally designed to put itself back together when it is broken or damaged. What happens when we fall and get a cut? Our bodies repair it. What happens when we get sick? Our bodies fight back and make us healthy again.

But what do these all have in common? TIME ⌛
Healing takes time! On top of that - we also know that the bigger the ailment, the longer it takes to heal.

When we see chronic pain symptoms, structural shifts and spinal degeneration, we are seeing problems that have been building up over a long time. A lot of the time, symptoms are not dealt with when they first arise. They are left until the pain is stopping the person from doing what they value most. Sometimes, that damage can be done over 5, 10, 20 even 30 years+. The longer we leave these issues, the worse they get.

What is important to know about chiropractic and vitalistic health, is that undoing multiple years worth of damage won’t take 20 - 30 years
but it won’t take one visit either.

So what needs to happen to help our healing?
Consistent habit changes.
- Reduce your bad habits
- Implement healthy habits
Understanding the healing process
- Knowing that quick fixes aren’t the answer
- Your body is smart!
- Discussing the healing timeline with you chiro
Taking your care seriously.
- Show up for ALL of your appointments
- Doing your exercises and homework!
- Openly communicating with your chiro about your journey

In past years, as the Officer Commanding of 222ACU, supervising the local unit of Austrlian Army Cadets, I would have attended 4 or 5 services on ANZAC day. This year will be more relaxed, but just as meaningful. I am proud to join a small group of volunteers and lead our community in a DUSK Service, at the Moruya 'Bush' War Memorial. The main objective of chiropractic care is to reduce nervous system interference by adjusting vertebral subluxation. What this does is enhances nervous system function and optimises health and wellbeing.
A research paper completed by the The International Federation of Chiropractors and Organisations in 2020 looked into the contributions of chiropractic’s salutogenic health care approach to the COVID-19 crisis. Within the paper, research explored the influence that chiropractic care has on immune system function.
“The nervous system plays a crucial role in alerting and guiding immune system cells to where an infection is located in an essential and coordinated response to danger.”
The CNS and the immune system work side by side driving immunity and system regulation. As stated within the paper, synergy between the two systems suggest that “the chiropractic adjustment may have broad-reaching effects on salutogenesis and adaptability via modulation of these coordinated subsystems.” When we remove interference within the nervous system, we are allowing the CNS to better connect and function with the immune system.
Chiropractic care is NOT a cure or treatment for infectious disease or illness, rather a utility to promote adaptability and proper function to the autonomic nervous system.

What are Atomic Habits?
“Your outcomes are a lagging measure of your habits” - James Clear in Atomic Habits

James Clear wrote the amazing book Atomic Habits which is a guide to breaking bad habits and establishing good ones. Our question today is: can we apply these lessons to our health too?

Let’s break it down. Here is the Habit Loop:
1. Cue
2. Craving
3. Response
4. Reward

“The cue triggers a craving, which motivates a response, which provides a reward, which satisfies the craving and, ultimately, becomes associated with the cue. Together, these four steps form a neurological feedback loop—cue, craving, response, reward; cue, craving, response, reward—that ultimately allows you to create automatic habits. This cycle is known as the habit loop.”
When it comes to our health, and trying to implement some of our ‘healthy habits checklist’, the four-step process helps build these achievable outcomes.

How can I make it obvious?
Write your habit down, affirm statements like “I will do this (habit)”, attach it to your environment and make it part of your everyday life so you see it every day.

How can I make it attractive?
Link it with something you enjoy doing so it reduces the desire to not complete it, find ways to make it fun.

How can I make it easy?
Make the steps to complete it quick and easy, make sure the environment you’re in doesn’t hinder the behaviour, find tools/technology to make it even easier where you can.

How can I make it satisfying?
Establish healthy rewards every time you complete the habit, make it a game - use a habit tracker to stay on course, if you miss it, make sure you don’t miss it twice!

Do you need some support to get your healthy habits on track? Here’s our simple Healthy Habits Checklist.
What are some ways we can support a healthy mind, body and nervous system? Great question!
There are a million and one things you can do to stay healthy but it’s hard to do it ALL. So, let’s cover the basics with this checklist ✅

Proactive VS Reactive Care Part 2!
Last time we talked about WHAT Proactive VS Reactive care is. Let’s dive into the pros/cons and the action pieces.

PROS
Proactive - being in control of health
Proactive - prevents bigger problems down the track
Proactive - feel better for longer
Proactive - cheaper in the long run
Proactive - early detection of more serious conditions
Reactive - cheaper in the beginning
Reactive - less responsibility day to day

CONS
Proactive - Requires discipline and effort to maintain
Proactive - is ongoing and does not have an ‘end date’
Reactive - can be very expensive (surgeries, hospitalisation)
Reactive - usually associated with lots of pain
Reactive - can often lead to being out of control of your body and it’s outcomes

Chiropractic care is proactive healthcare designed to get your spine and nervous system to function at their highest capacity. That’s why we recommend getting adjusted regularly. BUT, there are other ways to be proactive with your health outside of chiropractic care!
✅ regular exercise and physical movement
✅ proper nutrition and a healthy diet
✅ taking vitamins and supplements
✅ drink lots of water and stay hydrated
✅ get the recommended amount of sleep
✅ manage your stress in a healthy way

Not sure if you’re in favour of Proactive or Reactive Care? đŸ’Ș Let’s define it!
Proactive: “serving to prepare for, intervene in, or control an expected occurrence or situation, especially a negative or challenging one; anticipatory”
Reactive: “to act in a reverse direction or manner, especially so as to return to a prior condition.”
Proactive healthcare is simply the action to respond to your health prior to their being a negative outcome (disease, symptoms, injury).
Reactive healthcare is responding to these negative outcomes after they are already a problem.

Are you stressed and wondering why? Here’s more about the 3 T’s

Creating healthy habits can be hard - that’s a fact! In order to actually create and adopt healthy habits into our lives, we have to first understand what UNHEALTHY habits are. So here we go!
At Chiropractic Life we talk a lot about the three-legged stool, or the 3 T’s

Thoughts (emotional)
Toxins (chemical)
Trauma (physical)

When we hear the word trauma, we are immediately reminded of things like: car accidents, big falls, broken bones, violence and abuse, surgeries etc. Those answers are correct, but there are some factors we are missing, and these are micro-traumas. The tiny trips, falls, rolled ankles, excessive sitting, poor posture, sleeping wrong. Overtime, these can build up over time forming physical symptoms that can stop you from doing what you love.

Toxins
 now that’s an ugly word.
Everything from the food you eat, what you drink, what you put on your skin, to the air you breathe. The 21st century is surrounded by an abundance of different chemicals and toxins that our bodies weren’t designed to withstand.

Last but certainly not least is thoughts. The brain is a very powerful tool. It has the ability to change the body’s anatomy and physiology in order to adapt. In reality - anything the brain says, goes.
So wouldn’t that apply to your thoughts? Yes is the answer. Your emotional thoughts have the ability to change the way you feel, the way you interact, the way you function and can affect your overall health. It’s important to treat your mental health with as much love and kindness as you do your physical body.

Our next post will look at building healthy habits that support the 3 T’s!

Is there something you can do today to help improve your health tomorrow?

Take some time today to think about all the things in your life that bring you good health.
Do you eat well?
Exercise regularly?
Take time for yourself and your mental health?
Are you taking care of your spine and nervous system and getting adjusted regularly?

Think about areas in your life where you aren’t treating your health so well.
Constantly stressed?
Poor sleep?
Smoking?
Excessive alcohol consumption?
Low to no exercise or movement each day?
Overworking yourself?

So, ask yourself again, is there something you can do today to help improve your health tomorrow?
