Emotional healing can happen most effectively in a safe space. As friends, family members, or therapists, we strive to provide those safe spaces for friends or loved ones to share their traumas, fears and losses, and yet sometimes that isn’t enough. As humans, we bring in our biases, past experiences, and judgments, even when we try not to.

Horses don’t have those biases and can provide a safe space and relationship for emotional healing to occur. By incorporating horses in mental health sessions, clients may feel a sense of peace that they might not have otherwise, allowing them to reach a deeper level of vulnerability.

Another beautiful day at Mogendoura Farm Stay Moruya - for our Wellbeing with Horses Workshop.

It is always enjoyable to see people from our community come together and participate in these half-day workshops.

These workshops are open to South Coast community members who lived through the Black Summer bushfires and who want to move on from the challenges of the past few years.

Mogendoura Farm is a truly magical setting (as our photos show). It is for us an ideal spot to facilitate these workshops.

We have a limited number of spaces available for our next workshop on Friday 18th November.

Want to secure your place - contact Holly on 0413 337 007 soon.

These workshops are funded by FRRR and supported by Mogendoura Farm Stay Moruya.

Some unique roles that horses bring to counseling and psychotherapy sessions include:

✔️ Non-judgmental and unbiased: Horses are not biased by the client’s physical appearance or past mistakes, but rather respond to them in the moment without the common biases humans may have. Clients describe this “blank slate” experience and acceptance as being crucial to the therapy effectiveness, strengthening a positive sense of self.

✔️ Feedback and reflection: The instinctual nature of horses is to be vigilant, protective, and attuned to the emotions and signals of the herd, thus making them keen observers. This enables them to respond to the client’s nonverbal messages, behaviors, physical movements and emotions in a way that is more immediate and accurate than what we can tend to do as humans. This feedback provides interesting insights, in an emotionally safe way, reflecting aspects of ourselves we may not have been conscious about.

✔️ Parallel to life stories: The relationships with horses can parallel other relationships and situations in life, making the process applicable to real-life problems. A psychotherapist observing horse and human interactions often helps clients gain insights between what happens with the horses and what happens in real life contexts with humans. As their stories with the horses change, their stories in other areas of life change, too.
