It is getting closer to the most important date on the calendar... not Christmas, International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).
The theme for IDPwD 2023 is ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities.’
That is one heck of a mouthful and unlikely to mean much to the average Joe on the street, but in the simplest form, it means to address inequity and make the world fairer for people with disability by refocusing on the following 17 target areas (Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs)
1. No poverty
2. Zero Hunger
3. Good health and well-being
4. Quality education
5. Gender equality
6. Clean water and sanitation
7. Affordable and clean energy
8. Decent work and economic growth
9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure
10. Reduced inequalities
11. Sustainable cities and communities
12. Responsible consumption and production
13. Climate action
14. Life below water
15. Life on land
16. Peace, justice and strong institutions
17. Partnerships for the goals
You might look at these and think 'but these are issues for all humans to prioritise'. You would be right, but people with disability face greater barriers to achieving equity in these areas, more so if they experience other intersectionality factors, such as being from an aboriginal or CALD background, being part of the LGBTI+ community, being female etc.
What are your plans for IDPwD?
Are they inclusive?
Have you codesigned any plans with people with lived experience of disability?
