It’s NAIDOC Week and we are celebrating with our First Nations team members, patients and communities their rich history, diverse cultures and many achievements. Ochre has been very involved with First Nations communities since we were founded in Bourke over 20 years ago. Today, through our medical centres, we provide care to over 12,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, through our recruitment teams we place locum doctors into Aboriginal Medical Services and other health facilities caring for First Nations communities around the country, and we are proud ongoing sponsors of the Australian Federation of Medical Women “Purple Bush Leaves Medicine Bursaries” which provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women with financial support to further their medical careers. After some wonderful NAIDOC events last year, including at our Oakey practice in Queensland (main picture), our program this year culminates with our Walgett practice in Western NSW which on Friday will be hosting a community celebration in partnership with the Western NSW Local Health District. This is open to everybody in the area and will including a smoking ceremony, a welcome to country and dancing.

We celebrate our 10th anniversary on Sunday, having opened our doors for the first time on 23rd February 2015! Our amazing practice, with its large carpark, was designed to service the people of Bathurst and also to provide training opportunities for health students. We have a gym and physio area, other allied health facilities, rooms for visiting specialists, and training rooms that are regularly used by a New Parents Group, a Parkinson’s Support Group and others. During COVID, we were the only respiratory and vaccination clinic in town, apart from the hospital. A few years later, during NAIDOC Week in July 2023, we were proud to be the venue for the launch of Ochre Health’s first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Organised with the help of our local Wiradyuri elders and community members, and attended by leaders and guests from across the health care, political and academic spheres, this milestone event featured a smoking ceremony, dancing and the unveiling of a wonderful new artwork by local artist Meleisa Cox. Currently with nearly 4,000 active patients, we host medical students from both Charles Sturt University and the University of Western Sydney, and we facilitate care for the Hill End and Sofala communities outside town with monthly outreach clinics. A big thanks to all of our patients for your ongoing support, and congratulations to doctors and team members, past and present!
