When You’re Not Ready for Therapy

Not being ready doesn’t mean you don’t want support.
It often means:

A protective part is guarding you

Your nervous system is in survival mode

Your mind doesn’t feel safe enough to open up

You’re not alone in this.
Therapy begins long before the first session — in the moments you start getting curious about yourself.

Most of our deepest wounds as humans don’t come from what happened to us— they actually come from what didn’t happen when we needed it most.

Our core need is for safety and stability. That means protection and belonging.

As adults these wounds manifest as: becoming hyper-independent, high perfectionism, chronic “social anxiety,” trust issues, inability to emotionally regulation, avoidance, and self sabotage.

The work is to understand what you didn’t get. To grieve the situations— which usually feels like actually allowing yourself to be angry. To picture your younger self and know you deserved better. To forgive yourself for all the behaviors that came from your survival mode.

We all experience trauma, pain, and suffering. This is part of the human experience. And we all have the opportunity to alchemize our suffering through self compassion. To fully take responsibility for our lives. And to slowly (baby steps!) build a new future.

Where there’s trauma there is also opportunity for growth

It's important to remember the challenges faced by our youth. Every year, far too many young lives are lost to the devastating effects of mental health struggles and su***de. It's crucial that we come together as a community to support and uplift our youth in their times of need.

Let's prioritise open conversations about mental health, promote empathy and understanding, and provide accessible resources for those who may be struggling. Remember, your support and kindness can make a significant difference in someone's life. Reach out, listen, and offer help to those who may need it. Together, we can create a more compassionate and supportive environment for our youth.

During childhood, our emotional needs play a crucial role in shaping our self-esteem. If these needs, such as love, support, and validation, are not adequately met, it can create feelings of insecurity and worthlessness. Children rely on their caregivers to provide them with a nurturing and supportive environment. When this support is lacking, children may internalise a belief that they are not valued or worthy, leading to low self-esteem. This can affect their ability to form healthy relationships and navigate challenges in adulthood.

My teammates and I will be hiking some of the harshest terrain on the East Coast of Australia to raise funds for the Kokoda Youth Foundation’s life changing Youth Programs. We will be embodying the spirit of Kokoda by walking in memory of our Australian diggers.

The Kokoda Youth Foundation is a Gold Coast charity that runs experiential Youth Programs, inspiring young Aussies to reach their full potential. The foundation takes kids from all walks of life and provides them with free programs that have life changing capabilities. These kids are fondly known as the Kokoda Kids.

You can support our team in The Kokoda Challenge and Kokoda Youth Foundation in their mission to change lives by making a tax-deductible donation today!
