Hey Peeps! Sorry, I'm late with my post this week.

Here we are with another instalment of the Just Askin' series. Let's go!

When I'm checking my people out after a Massage, I usually ask them, "When would they be able to rebook for another Massage". In some cases, I strongly suggest to them a timeline. My clients that are feeling really rough tend to take my advice and return sooner than later. Others return when they can fit it into their busy schedules. The common denominator is how regularly they get a Massage.

Self-care is a must! Today we are hitting a question I've forgotten how often I've been asked.

Do I, as a Massage Therapist, get Massages?

Let me bring y'all in on a lesser-known secret (though, I'm not sure why it's considered a secret). This type of work is hard. No, I'm not swinging an axe, hammer or using welding gear. Nope, I'm not running like mad through stores serving people (hats off to my retail and grocery store people! You rock! Especially, coming up on the Holiday season!) I don't have to fix computers when some user has broken something, or something goes offline, and I don't have to figure out how to help people market their businesses even though they act like they can do your job better than you can.

And I don’t do the frilly massages that make you think someone is just rubbing oil into your skin.

No, I don't do any of that. However, I do a lot of lifting, pulling, pushing, holding & grabbing . Sometimes I'm sitting, most times I'm standing and bending, (should I even mention the amount of time I'm squatting!) so correct posture is a must! Those of you that have attended the SMBiT Professionals Conferences where I come in to do Seated Chair Massages, know that this isn't light work for someone that has only a little bit of muscle. It's all out there for all y'all to see.

This is very physical work, so it only stands to reason that I take the same advice that I dish out daily.

Okay, here's the short answer. Yes, absolutely, I do.

Now, have I always done so? Nope!

That's why I give the advice and make the suggestions I do. I know what it did to me, even when I was in better physical shape than I am now. Not taking care of myself on the job did take its toll.

Now, how often do I get a Massage? I get one weekly, not counting the very few weeks that my Massage Therapist can't make it, or I can’t because life just happens. When I cancel, I rebook as quickly as I can.

Lena, who gives YOU Massages? Who will take You on as a very seasoned Therapist? Another seasoned Therapist, and I only hope she knows she's taught me as much as I hope I have taught her. Shout out to Kylie Hendy from Heavenly Healing in Castle Hill.

Lena's Thoughts

We are ALL on a journey learning how to take care of our bodies, and all of us are in different places on this trek. Be patient and kind with yourself and others as you learn.

Yes, I know what it feels like to be sore from a long day or a long week at work. Don't get me wrong, I love what I do, but I also know what it feels like when someone is digging into the muscles that absolutely ache. It makes me a better Massage Therapist that I do receive the same treatments I give, and I truly believe it makes me a better Massage Therapist for all of you. A little bit of empathy never hurts!

As before, if this series conjures up some questions that you would like answered, feel free to ask in the comments. It might end up in the Just Askin’ queue that gets answered (PM me directly if it’s a more sensitive question). Keep in mind that I don’t know it all and can’t answer it all. Please keep it professional and don’t vex, heckle, harass, or annoy the Massage Therapist!

Hey all, here is the continuation from our previous post on what happens to your body with mild dehydration. We are picking up where we left off running through body systems. So! Let's get into it!

Your immune system becomes impaired because of the reduction in fluid restricting the lymph from circulating as freely (not that lymph moves fast to start with, but fluid loss hinders it more). This may also trigger a variety of inflammatory responses that the body can struggle to handle.

Your skin dries out and begins to lose elasticity and skin injuries can take longer to heal because blood carrying the necessary cells for healing, also isn't flowing as freely.

Your body can't sweat losing the ability to cool and regulate its temperature increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. For all my Aussies that use these terms interchangeably, learn the difference! It can save your life! Especially, as we roll into summer in the Great Downunder!

Your urine becomes darker and more concentrated as your body tries to conserve fluid inhibiting waste removal. This often can lead to calcification to inner lining of the kidney that break off and become kidney stones. For all those that have passed one of those things, I've only heard the stories, and I don't wish to experience it. You have to drink a load of water to pass these bad boys… ick!

Flowing on from the urinary system, lack of water continues to interrupt waste removal in your digestive system as your bowels can't move waste as freely leading to constipation or hard and irregular bowel movements. This system is also responsible for enzyme function and nutrient absorption that is also impaired by the lack of hydration.

It can even affect the reproductive systems of both men and women respectively. Women in hormone balance and men in s***m production. Again, all these systems are extremely complicated and more can happen then I can write in this brief outline, but hopefully, y'all get the idea.

Now, Lena's personal favourite system.

The muscular system. Less fluid in your body leads to muscle fatigue from electrolyte imbalance, painful cramping from the loss of trace minerals such as sodium, potassium and more! Joint stiffness occurs as there is a reduction in lubrication supplied to the joints.

That glass of water is looking pretty good now, huh!

Again, all this is only from a 2% loss of water. A lot of people are far more dehydrated than that! How many issues can be resolved with this simple solution alone. I'll be real. Not everything is related to water consumption, but if can be cured or avoided by merely have an appropriate amount of water for your body, what's the harm in trying?

'I have coffee. It's made with water. Isn't that good enough?'

Don’t we all wish!

The sad fact is that coffee is a diuretic and can dehydrate you more worsening the problem. Isn't that just a kick in the teeth! For my tea drinkers, you are not immune to this problem. Some teas are just as much of a diuretic. For my caffeine addicts, if you're already feeling thirsty, reach for a tall glass of cool water first, then go for the tea or coffee later and limit it to a single cup (No, not the 750 ml cup).

'You need to drink plenty of water'.

For anyone that comes in for a massage, they all hear this Phrase every time they get a massage treatment. Whether you are a triathlete, body builder, gym ju**ie or an office worker that comes in to get massages, your body recovers more quickly after a Massage if there is enough fluid to flush your system and clear out the lactic acid aiding your bodies in your chosen sport(s). Conveniently, it helps to alleviate Post Massage Soreness, whether or not you're into sports.

Lena, I don't like straight water. It's tasteless and horrible. Honestly, I hear this more often than you would anticipate. Water is a basic necessity, and lot of people have to deal with this issue and have no problem posting suggestions on how they get around this particular hurdle. Look them up. You might find something that helps you through this while addressing this issue.

Okay, so how much water should you be drinking?

Everyone is different, so you have to figure out how much water works for you and your working conditions. Someone working in an office is going to consume less than someone working outside in a manual labour job. However, I can give you a Ballpark figure. (Americanism should be expected from me)

For my Metric System peeps!

Let's use your body weight. For every 25 kgs you weigh, consume 1 Lt of water (ex. If you weigh 50kgs, have 2 Lts.; 75kgs, 3 Lts. Hopefully, you can do the math from here)

For my Imperial System followers!

Again, using your body weight, cut it in half and drink that many ounces in water per day.

Geez, Lena you expect me to drink all that every day?!

Try your hardest. You'll be surprised by how quickly your body adapts to the increase in fluid and welcomes the change. Again, for the first few weeks, you may need to be near a bathroom until you bladder increases in size to handle the increased volume. Keep going. You'll do fine!

Lena's Thoughts:

When I first met my beautiful husband, his idea of drinking anything was a cup of tea per day. Just one. Perhaps 2 if he could find that time to make another. Yeah, you can imagine my heart dropping to my feet when I learned that! Naturally, that contributed to him having cluster headaches and a very hard time getting his mind to focus on anything. That was important for him, because he, too, is a techie. Honestly, I'm not sure how he was able to concentrate at all. Yes, like some of you, he had other things going on as well that he has had to address, and I am happy to report the changes in him are remarkable. No, I don't harp on him to drink water. He's a big boy, and he can tell all by his lonesome when he hasn't consumed enough and trots off to the kitchen to fill his water bottle.

I hope this article answers a few questions or give you a serious moment to think how important Water is to the body and that all the medical doctors that harp on this topic are seriously not kidding. Hear them out and do your body a favour. When you come in for a Massage, be sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your massage and as much as you can in the days following your Massage.

Water... Why??

Bringing in another instalment of the 'Just Askin' Series. We tackle a topic that has been beaten like a gym bag and yet it still requires us to take another swing.

I've had this conversation a lot… and I mean, a loooooot of times over the years! After pretty much every Massage session, I get the privilege of giving Post Massage Advice (my brother would just say I'm being bossy, and maybe he's not wrong). Included in this repertoire repeated multiple times a day in my dulcet tones is the exact phrase…

'You need to drink plenty of water'

Lena! Not this again!

I know. I know. The repetition is sometimes overwhelming, even for me. You don't like hearing it. I don't like repeating it, and yet again we square off with this gym bag topic once more.

I won't kid you. This is a lengthy post. So, I will divide it into 2 articles so you don't have to suffer through a very long-winded rant. However, it is jam packed with information and worth the read. Hopefully, someone that struggle with this topic may find it useful.

Let's start out with what happens to the body with a 2% water loss. This loss is considered 'mild dehydration' (I love the 'mild' part to this, really).

Nothing big, right?

Let's begin with the more prominent systems, keep in mind, all of them are important.

For all my techs that rely on their brains for their job, here's a tasty little nugget.

Just this small decrease in fluid causes a reduced attention span, memory impairment and problems with basic motor coordination e.g. movement (such as typing), strength, coordination, dexterity, speed, etc. It also commonly causes mood shifts by increasing irritability, anxiety and fatigue. In reality, your body knows it's under strain and not able to function well, and it's putting up a fight to operate in less-than-optimal conditions.

Now the headaches that you likely experience (for those of you that don't, yay you!) begin to worsen because of the reduction in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). That’s the liquid that flows in its own separate hydraulic system that encompasses the brain and spinal column allowing the electrical conductivity that operates the Nervous System - (Lena's paraphrasing of another very complicated process).
This is only the impairments to the nervous system, 1 of 8 systems in the body

Let's hit on the Cardiovascular system, or the heart and all related vessels, for those less anatomically literate. Less fluids means there is a reduction in blood volume causing the heart to work harder as it needs to push thicker blood through the veins and still maintain blood pressure, which increasing pressure on the heart and blood vessels. Here's another problem that manifests, moving too fast can lead to fainting or dizziness as the decreased blood volume causes lower blood pressure and impairs oxygen (O2) delivery to cells and tissues.

But Lena, it's the respiratory system that exchanges O2 in the blood. Right you are! It's almost as if the heart and lungs work as a team…

Here's a very common symptom of dehydration. Thirst. Dry throat. You get this when you speak a lot or deliver presentations. Speakers are usually given a courtesy bottle of water, but this isn't the only mucus coated surface that suffers dry out from lack of water. To make this article less lengthy and boring, I'll let you google "mucus lined orifices in the human body". You might be surprised what you learn! The drying out of these important orifices can increase susceptibility to irritation of these lined areas and can lead to a variety of different infections.

Addendum: I am not a medical doctor, and I cannot diagnose, nor do I try.

I'll run through the other systems of the human body and the symptoms that can manifest in the next article. Keep in mind that the effects on the above mentioned system, and in the continued post, are more than I can outline in these two articles, but these are some of the highlights.

Lena's Thoughts:
In this world where so much information (and misinformation) is being tossed around, it's hard to focus on the stuff that really is important. Now, there are legitimate health issues that necessitate drinking a little less water, but that is not the norm and proper hydration should be encouraged. Follow your doctor's advice if those medical issues are yours!

I challenge you to take in the proper amount of water for your body and keep it up. You might be surprised by the changes you encounter, though you might need to be near a bathroom until your bladder increases in size to accommodate the increase in water.

Here’s another instalment of the Just Askin’ Series, and another question that I am asked frequently.

“What’s the difference between a Relaxation Massage, Remedial Massage and a Deep Tissue Massage and which would I recommend?”

Answer
A Relaxation Massage is just that. All about just a gentle full body rub down (again, keeping it professional), or it can be more concentrated on an area like the neck and shoulders region. A lot of people love this particular treatment as its function is more focused on soothing and calming the nervous system. (Pointing my finger at all my stress-heads. Hubby included!)

A Remedial Massage is more a therapeutic treatment that uses assessments (how the body commonly moves, or in many cases, doesn’t move) called Active or Passive Range of Motion testing (I’ll cover this in a different post, if people are curious) and making treatment plans that my clients are able and willing to follow. The aim is injury recovery and chronic pain relief. Mixed into my daily routine is teaching people about the importance of good posture (something we will definitely cover in another post). Many modalities of Remedial Massage are focused on the accident and injury treatments in some way shape and form via either trigger point, or myofascial therapies. There are a lot more, but just to name a few.

Deep Tissue Massage targets the deeper layers of muscles and fascia (a connective tissue that works as a structural support and is found throughout the body. There is still on-going research to understand how vast the fascia is and how extensively it integrates the human body). This type of Massage aims at breaking down adhesions. Adhesions are basically sticky bands of tissues formed as the body heals after surgery, injury or inflammation, but sometimes this healing process goes into over-drive making the tissues cling together instead of gliding smoothly against each other (keep in mind, I’m simplifying a complicated anatomical process). Now both Deep Tissue and Remedial focus on helping this healing process. When I was being taught (years and years ago), Deep Tissue focused on the deeper layers of tissue rather than clinical assessment or rehab. That I am aware, not too much seems to have changed on the front, but that also is contingent on the Therapist and what they bring to the table.

Lena’s Thoughts:

Which one would I recommend? I have been doing this job for so long, I usually don’t bother asking which massage people want anymore. I merely ask people what concerns they have that brings them into my office. I rarely focus on one type of treatment. Don’t get me wrong! I love giving a good Relaxation Massage. It’s like having an hour break where I actually get paid! However, there are times having only one of the above is necessary, and I evaluate that by case. I tend to integrate a few types of Massage into a single treatment, applying the proper modality where necessary. All of this is completely dependent on my client. What they want and what they are looking to achieve e.g. fewer to zero tension headaches, if possible, or focus on lower and upper back pain, if they have pain while lifting weights at the gym, DOMS (for my gym ju**ies), just making it easier for a new parent to lift and hold their infant, or just calming down because a new baby never lets ANYONE SLEEP!

Addendum: I am not a medical doctor, and I cannot prescribe or diagnose, nor do I try, but I am pretty good at being a pain, so it’s easier for me to find where it is (Yes, you can Laugh).

As before, if this series conjures up some questions that you would like answered, feel free to ask in the comments. I started training to be a Professional Massage in the US in 2002 and moved here to Australia more than a decade ago where I had to retrain in my love for Massage all over again. Over the years, I have had a lot of questions about various things related to the Massage field, e.g. what I do, how things are done, what things mean and why we give certain advice. So, I’ve decided to begin addressing some these questions one at a time.

Let’s call this little series, Just Askin’ , and I will answer these questions one at a time the best I can.

The first question I get quite frequently: "What’s the difference between a Masseuse and a Massage Therapist?” This is a slightly long answer, but let’s give it a fast go!

Answer
Massage Therapists are trained and qualified health professionals. We have certification, diplomas or degrees and quiet a number of us are recognised by and associated with professional associations. In Australia, most are also health fund approved (no, not all depending on the individual's situation) and have studied anatomy, physiology and have had to learn about various forms of pathology to help treat our clients or partner with other healthcare professionals in forming a treatment plan for our clients.

Wow, what a mouthful!

Masseuse(F) or Masseur(M)… well, it isn’t a secret that the Massage field has a than less professional side that today carries an ambiguous connotation. Historically, it’s a more antiquated name that covers anyone that provides massage services, professional or otherwise. Because of this distinction, professionals tend to put some understandable distance between the two names.

Lena’s thoughts: Personally, I’m less concerned how someone refers to me in this regard. If they ask, I have always called myself a Massage Therapist. If they don’t ask, I rarely correct, unless I feel it necessary. I came into this field while this topic was a hot button mess on the table. As long as my clients understand that the only treatments they will receive are strictly professional, and the only hard they get is a hard 'NO', I’m cool either way.

If this series conjures up some questions that you would like answered, feel free to ask in the comments. It might end up in the Just Askin’ queue that gets answered (PM me directly if it’s a more sensitive question). Share and tag a friend if you think it is useful. Keep in mind that I don’t know it all and can’t answer it all.

Please keep it professional and don’t vex, heckle, harass or annoy the Massage Therapist!
