Im writing this post as a frustrated single mum navigating 3 teenagers who are addicted to their digital devices as Im sure many parents would understand. Arghhhh. Ive done everything I can to create a healthy home for my sweethearts - we live in an area where my neighbours are so old 'Google, Snapchat and Instagram' isnt in their vocabulary; my home is fortuitously located in a valley that is not impacted by two nearby mobile phone base stations and I've spent almost $2000 wiring my house to ensure it is ‘electrically neutral’. Furthermore I recently installed Starlink as my internet provider, once I figured out how to bypass the starlink router (due to high radiation) even though I can no longer access my schools Compass portal as it thinks Im in Japan, Russia or Germany which resulted in hours of phone calls with the schools head IT consultant to figure out!
Ive used every tool under my belt including undertaking a PhD to reason with my kids as to why using a smart phone for hours a day and in particular before bed is detrimental to their health. But my opinion falls on deaf ears - literally, because they have noise-induced deafness from listening to hundreds, lets be honest, thousands of hours of music over the years and partly because Im their Mum – what would I know? (after which I remind them they’ve only recently come out of my womb and as yet, have little life experience). That doesn’t go down well so we are bound to repeat this discussion sometime soon, yet, Im confident I will be able to convince them one day despite the twins recently turning 18.
Sleep is a critical human need that affects every aspect of our health. Chronic sleep disturbances are linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, mental health issues, and even early death. In fact, almost every mental health condition is connected to insomnia, and many chronic diseases include sleep problems as part of their symptoms.
We talk a lot about stress, late-night eating, shift work, medication, and pain as reasons for poor sleep, but what about our home environment? Factors like blue light from screens and lighting, noise, mould, and Wi-Fi enabled digital devices can all disrupt sleep—yet these are rarely discussed. The public is finally waking up to the dangers of mould, but the impact of manmade electromagnetic fields is still flying under the radar—much like asbestos did decades ago. The need for an army of EMF Testing Technicians is the only sure way to get the information out there. Our love of technology makes this a tough conversation, but it’s one we need to have.
