Marine Rescue Broken Bay

Marine Rescue Broken Bay Marine Rescue Broken Bay is a 100% volunteer organisation, dedicated to saving lives on the water, around Pittwater, Broken Bay and Offshore.

We rely on donations and the generosity of local businesses. The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, established in 1937, was Australia’s oldest and largest volunteer maritime search and rescue organization. The Broken Bay Division, originally a foundation part of the Sydney region command, became a separate entity in 1947 under the leadership of Skipper Ray Weingott. Over the years, the Division operated from various bases, including Church Point, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, and from 1992 , the Royal Motor Yacht Club who kindly provided dedicated facilities and berthing for our rescue vessels. In 2005, the Division moved to its own premises at Bayview Boat Ramp, with support from Pittwater Council. On January 1, 2010, the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, and Volunteer Rescue Association unified to form Marine Rescue NSW. Over the years the Unit has provided radio coverage and rescue services and contributed to the establishment of further units at Brisbane Water, Hawkesbury, and a central Radio Centre, now located at Belrose. Currently, Marine Rescue Broken Bay operates two high spec rescue boats from a dedicated wharf at Bayview. The base was rebuilt in March 2023, featuring modern crew facilities and a purpose-built training space available for public hire. Approximately 100 volunteers support the local community, collaborating closely with NSW Police (Marine Area Command), Surf Life Saving, SES, NSW Ambulance, and NSW Maritime for maritime and flood response needs.

Do you have an EPIRB?
An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is a vital piece of safety equipment for boaters. In a life-threatening emergency, it sends a distress alert allowing search and rescue teams to locate you and respond.
Make sure you have one and that you get your EPIRB serviced.

This evening, just as the weather was about to turn nasty, our crew on BB21 were asked to assist a 17ft runabout with broken steering near Lovett Bay. A quick tow back to Rowland Reserve ahead of the impending downpour meant a safe and happy boater. Good work Bravo watch!

Shocked that it's 1mth ago today and we've been too busy to post!
Each year Broken Bay sends a vessel down to the Harbour to be there for the community in need. It is a long, busy, unpredictable and challenging gig, where our volunteers take time away from their own families to be of service...but wow, the views are great, when you get a moment🎊🎉

Did you know that more than 580 rescues have been completed, statewide, since the 1st Jan? Our crews have responded to everything from flat batteries and mechanical failures to urgent emergencies requiring rapid on‑water intervention.
Every rescue is powered by the dedication of trained volunteers. Whether it is in extreme heat, challenging conditions, or unusual hours, help is available when it’s needed most.
As the holiday season continues, we’re asking all boaters to stay alert, stay prepared, and stay safe on the water. Simple steps like checking your fuel, logging on with Marine Rescue, and carrying the right safety gear make a real difference

A great reminder from NSW Maritime
Out and about at night? Don’t forget your navigation lights!
Make sure you’re always using them:
🌅 After sunset
🌄 Before sunrise
🌫️ When visibility is limited
👉 Failing to light up properly increases the risk of dangerous collisions.
Be bright, be seen!

From a small cut to a bumped head, having basic safety gear on board can make all the difference while you’re out on the water.
A well-stocked first aid kit means you can handle the little things quickly and keep your day on track, instead of turning a minor issue into a major problem.
It’s better to have safety gear and not need it than need it and not have it.

🚨 Volunteer Milestone Achievement 🚨
Congratulations to Maia Edge, who today passed their Marine Rescue Crew rating.
The qualification represents far more than a certificate. It reflects countless hours of training, commitment, and a genuine willingness to serve the community. As a volunteer, they’ve balanced work, family, and personal time to ensure they’re ready to respond when the call comes — whether that’s on the water, in training, or supporting their crew.
The dedication of our volunteers strengthens our capability and helps keep our community safe. Each makes a real difference, and today we celebrate the hard work that got them here. 👏
