Anna was on the final night of a dream skiing holiday in Japan when her life changed in an instant. đż
After a fun night out with her partner Liam, she went to bed feeling completely normal. Hours later, she woke aggressively shaking, vomiting black fluid and then fainting as meningitis and sepsis took hold.
Liam said the symptoms worsened quickly. đ
'She had intense muscle pain, as if sheâd been hit by a bus,' he said.
'Then I noticed a rash all over her body, like little red mosquito bites. Thatâs when I realised we needed to call an ambulance.'
Doctors in Japan later told Anna's family they werenât sure she would survive. They said she could have died if she went two more hours without medical attention. đĽ
Anna spent five days fully sedated and intubated, with Liam and her parents at her bedside.
'Itâs crazy how quickly life can changeâit all happened so quickly,' she said.
Luckily, Anna's story had a positive ending, and she returned home to continue her recovery at Gold Coast University Hospital - GCUH (GCUH). đ
'I was vaccinated for meningococcal at school, but not for type B, which is the strain I got,' she said.
Free type B vaccinations were added to Queenslandâs state funded immunisation program in March 2024. The program has included a four in one vaccine covering the A, C, W and Y strains since 2017.
Now, Anna wants to raise awareness about the symptoms and the importance of vaccination, particularly for meningococcal B.
'Iâd encourage everyone to learn about the vaccinations available to protect them and their families,' she said.
We agree Anna! Thanks for sharing your story, and we're glad you're on the road to recovery. đ¤
