🌍 World Immunisation Week (24 - 30 April) 🌍

This World Immunisation Week, we’re celebrating the power of vaccines to protect lives - no matter where you live. 💉💙

For people in rural and remote communities, access to immunisation isn’t always easy. That’s why supporting frontline doctors with the right equipment and resources is so important. Immunisation helps prevent serious illness, protects our most vulnerable, and keeps entire communities strong and healthy.

At Rural Doctors Foundation, we’re proud to support rural GPs who work every day to make lifesaving care - including immunisation - accessible closer to home.

We've just loved having Dr MJ at the Medical Centre for the Community General Practice component of her Rural Generalist specialty training.

A Rural Generalist has advanced skills, often at a level provided by consultant specialists in the "bigsmoke", as well as specialist level skills in the "bit of everything" healthcare that marks the specialty of General Practice right here in the community where you live, work and play.

All our senior doctors at the Medical Centre have found our calling with advanced rural generalist skills from maternity care to palliative care - looking after you and your families from pre-conception to post-cremation.

Australian Breastfeeding Association – Logan South-Scenic Rim Group have our next meet up on Monday 20 April at 9.30am in the Woodhill Hall, 6098 Mt Lindesay Hwy, Woodhill.
The topic is "A Village of Support: Celebrating Motherhood".
This is a great opportunity to meet other parents/carers and babies in the local area, learn from each other, share your ideas and have a bit of fun. Please invite other families with babies or parents-to-be to our info and chat session.
If you can manage to bring a plate of healthy food to share for morning tea that would be great if not just come along and share with us.
We are also happy to discuss other questions, if you have them on the day.
All welcome! We hope to see you there.

Anna was on the final night of a dream skiing holiday in Japan when her life changed in an instant. 🎿

After a fun night out with her partner Liam, she went to bed feeling completely normal. Hours later, she woke aggressively shaking, vomiting black fluid and then fainting as meningitis and sepsis took hold.

Liam said the symptoms worsened quickly. 😔

'She had intense muscle pain, as if she’d been hit by a bus,' he said.

'Then I noticed a rash all over her body, like little red mosquito bites. That’s when I realised we needed to call an ambulance.'

Doctors in Japan later told Anna's family they weren’t sure she would survive. They said she could have died if she went two more hours without medical attention. 🏥

Anna spent five days fully sedated and intubated, with Liam and her parents at her bedside.

'It’s crazy how quickly life can change—it all happened so quickly,' she said.

Luckily, Anna's story had a positive ending, and she returned home to continue her recovery at Gold Coast University Hospital - GCUH (GCUH). 😊

'I was vaccinated for meningococcal at school, but not for type B, which is the strain I got,' she said.

Free type B vaccinations were added to Queensland’s state funded immunisation program in March 2024. The program has included a four in one vaccine covering the A, C, W and Y strains since 2017.

Now, Anna wants to raise awareness about the symptoms and the importance of vaccination, particularly for meningococcal B.

'I’d encourage everyone to learn about the vaccinations available to protect them and their families,' she said.

We agree Anna! Thanks for sharing your story, and we're glad you're on the road to recovery. 🤗

Today is World Parkinson’s Day, a day to raise awareness, show understanding and stand alongside the millions of people living with Parkinson’s around the world.

At Rural Doctors Foundation, we recognise that Parkinson’s is a complex and often invisible condition - particularly for people living in rural and remote communities where access to healthcare can be more challenging.

This , we acknowledge everyone living with Parkinson’s, their families, carers and healthcare professionals, and we reaffirm our commitment to supporting better access to care, awareness and compassion in rural Australia.

💙 Together, we can make a difference.

Flu vaccines are now becoming available, especially for over-65s, along with a no-needle nose spray for children aged between 2-5years.

Because flu season is a bit unpredictable there’s a risk in waiting too long - you might catch it!

It’s not true that ‘flu vaccination “only lasts 3 months”: you are likely to have protection for 6 months; it doesn’t “cut off” suddenly like flipping a switch.

We have COVID vaccines available now, too.

When working out the best time to get your vaccine, you may be balancing a theoretical benefit by waiting against the chance of actually getting the flu before you get vaccinated.

This is the essence of the Rural Generalist speciality: one GP caring for patients across multiple settings like general practice, aged care facilities, at home and in the local hospital.

At the Medical Centre we’ve been committed to teaching, training and practicing as Rural Generalists since before the specialty even had a name.

If you've ever seen Dr Navin at Beaudesert Hospital, you'll know his sock and scrub combos don't miss.🩺🧦

His interest in superheroes and movies is what first inspired him to buy funky scrubs in his internship year, and he hasn't looked back. 🦸

'I keep adding to my collection. I think it just makes the workplace fun; it makes patients smile and is a good ice breaker to build rapport with patients and staff,' he said.

Dr Navin completed a rural medical student placement at Beaudesert Hospital in 2016. He enjoyed it so much that he decided to become a rural generalist and is now a senior doctor there. 🏥

'Now I'm working back where my journey started,' he said.

Rural generalists are doctors who are experts in rural medicine. They're skilled in general practice, emergency and inpatient care. Many rural generalist doctors also have advanced skills in areas like emergency medicine and obstetrics.

When he's not at Beaudesert Hospital, you'll find him at Beaudesert's medical centre working as a general practitioner (GP).

'I love the combination of GP and hospital work—it keeps things new and interesting.

'Being able to work in GP and hospital, in the same town, allows for even better continuity of care as I see patients in both the emergency and in GP.'

Thanks to you and all doctors for everything you do! ❤️

Travelling for healthcare gets costly. Qld has a Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme that rebates 34c/km based on hospital-to-hospital distance (NOT home-to-hospital) and so most trips to Brisbane or Gold Coast are eligible.

Logan Hospital is just UNDER 50km from Beaudesert Hospital (by 300m) so rebates are not available if that's where you're treated.

If you're interested in PTSS subsidies, enrol in the Scheme (form A) then make a specific appointment with your GP for copies of Form B (It takes a while and a specific visit is usually necessary - it's usually worth it!)

Access to healthcare shouldn't depend on whether you can afford a tank of fuel. ⛽️💔
With fuel costs impacting everyone from farmers to families, the 34c per km PTSS rate just isn't cutting it—especially compared to the ATO’s 88c per km standard.
But there is a solution already in the guidelines: PTSS offices can book and pay for commercial travel (bus, rail, or air) directly.
✅ No upfront costs for the patient.
✅ No waiting for reimbursements.
✅ Reliable access to care.
It’s time we make fully subsidised options (where commercial travel is accessible) the priority for all Queenslanders travelling for health.
