|| Why exercise can be better than rest when recovering from an injury ||
Check out this great article in the Washington Post regarding the management of running injuries using strategic exercise rehab strategies.
βBefore, people would get the RICE and then, not surprisingly, injuries tended to recur because they werenβt addressing the underlying issues,β
βYouβre already in pain and feeling terrible, if youβre ordered to rest, youβre likely to feel even worse. The emotional piece takes a toll. Keeping patients moving keeps their mood up throughout the rehab process.β
This strategy is a big part of our philosophy at the Functional Movement Group when we are dealing with our patients and clients. The keys to this are what we discuss in our Functional Treatment + Training course:
- Choose a movement or exercise that is meaningful to the goal of the patient or client.
- Identify the threshold for movement (quality or pain) using 10 movement variables (eg: distance, speed, load, anglulation etc).
- Continue to progress slowly toward movement goal.
If you would like to learn more about the Functional Movement Groups process of using 8 fundamental movements, 10 key movement variables and the principles of neuroscience and pain science to create robust patients and clients who have a reduced risk of injury and perform better at their chosen tasks check out:
