The Duckett review into music and art therapy and the NDIS has been made public. In case you missed it, the NDIS initiated a review into the pricing of music and art therapy under the scheme, and whether we met the evidence standards to still be considered a ‘therapy’.

We had some wins out of this report. Music and art therapy will remain as therapeutic supports under the NDIS, and more checks and balances will be put in place to crack down on people delivering these services without appropriate qualifications.

However, it’s not all good news. From 24th November, music and art therapy will have their hourly rate cut, reducing our session fee to $156.16/hour. It’s currently $193.99/hour which is the same as most other allied health professionals on the scheme.

For a small business, this is an enormous decrease. This money is used for overheads such as paying staff, venue hire, insurance, professional registration, petrol, tax, superannuation, bookkeeping and accounting fees, and equipment/instrument maintenance.

Sounds for Change intends to kick on until the very end, but for some small businesses, this cut might force them to close their doors.

We are currently reviewing our fee structure, and will send out more information on the changes to our participants in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, if you know a music therapist working under the NDIS, please send them some love. They’re probably burnt out and exhausted from this 10 month long fight, and probably just want to get on with the job of making people’s lives better with music.

We are more than just numbers on a ledger, numbers of dollars cut from the NDIS. We are people with families, mortgages, bills to pay. Please keep this in mind next time you see a media report about NDIS spending 💜

Let’s bust some myths about music therapy access.
These are just some of the tidbits of misinformation I’ve heard over the last few years, so let us set the record straight.
Number 4 is like a roach under the couch that won’t die and is my least favourite bit of misinformation going around about music therapy lately.
If you are an RMT, feel free to add your own myths in the comments! 💜

Update: No current changes to music therapy under NDIS and we are open for business as usual.

The CEO of NDIS Rebecca Falkingham has reiterated in a letter to our AMTA president that as of this week, there have been no changes to the pricing or status of music therapy on the scheme. This is after the 24-25 Pricing Review was released last week.

They have also corrected the information on the NDIS website that has been causing a lot of confusion for participants, planners and support coordinators, regarding pricing for music therapy supports.

However, we are still waiting for the Duckett Review to be released, so the anxiety and fight continues on.

We also continue to wait for more information about how the new rules regarding billing in 10 minute increments will affect the structure of our practice.

Until more information comes out, participants can continue accessing music therapy in their NDIS plan as usual.

The Duckett review into music therapy on the NDIS was completed on 17th April, and we are now waiting for more information to be released. This review looked at pricing for music therapy, and whether we met the evidence standards to be considered a ‘therapy’.

We’re all feeling a lot of emotions while we wait for news. And that’s me showing a lot of restraint.

For now, nothing has changed and music therapy is still an NDIS approved support 💜

Today marks the start of World Music Therapy Week!

The question I get asked most often is: ‘what is music therapy?’. The elevator pitch is simple: music therapy is where we use research based music interventions to achieve non-musical goals. Those goals might be physical, social, emotional, communication-based, cognitive or spiritual. Music therapists work across a wide array of areas, including schools, disability centres, hospitals, aged care, prisons, mental health facilities, early childhood settings, palliative care, brain injury units, and out in the community, which might encompass all of the above!

This year we also celebrate 50 years of the Australian Music Therapy Association, who work tirelessly to advocate for our rightful place in the healthcare landscape.
We wouldn’t be here today without them!

Why do we drum?🪘💜

Drums are a core feature of music therapy, and there’s more to them than meets the eye (or ear). 👂

Drumming in music therapy offers a range of thoroughly researched health benefits. These include:

Stress Reduction - The rhythmic nature of drumming has been shown to lower cortisol levels. 🧠

Improved Coordination - Drumming engages both sides of the brain and enhances fine and gross motor skills. 🏃🏻‍♀️

Cognitive Boost - Drumming enhances focus and memory through repetitive beats and rhythms. 🥁

Social Connection - In group settings, drumming promotes teamwork and a sense of belonging. 🫂

✨Update on NDIS Review! ✨

The deadline for the NDIS review into music therapy has been extended until 17th April. The review is looking into pricing of music and art therapy and whether we meet the evidentiary standards to be considered a ‘therapy’ under the NDIS.

Right now, nothing has changed, music therapy is still funded under the NDIS and its business as usual over here 😎💜

March 8th is International Women’s Day!

In the past year, I’ve been reflecting on how many impressive women I know personally, and the number is huge. In Australia, music therapy is a profession predominately made up of women, a fact that should not be ignored when considering the government is trying to take away our funding and employment opportunities.

I am constantly astounded, and lifted up, by their strength, intelligence, determination, resilience, empathy and ability to just ‘get s**t done’, sometimes despite the odds.

Business owners, cancer survivors, mothers… there’s too many to list. I see you all, I acknowledge you all.

We also acknowledge here the diverse experiences of the term ‘women’, which extends to trans women, First Nations women, women of colour, disabled women, q***r women, or those who identify as ‘women’ 💜
