Today, I want to share a personal story about my journey in embracing self-care, a practice that has transformed my life in ways I never expected.

About 5 years ago, I found myself beyond exhausted, overwhelmed and burnt out. Balancing work, family, volunteer positions, medical conditions and personal commitments left little time for myself. I often felt like I was running on empty, and my mental health was suffering. One evening, after a particularly long day, I decided enough was enough. It was time to prioritise my well-being.

I started small. I set aside just 10 minutes each morning for a mindful ritual. I would brew a cup of herbal tea, sit quietly in my favorite chair, feet in the grass, and focus on my breath. This simple act of pause, of quiet, allowed me to center myself and set a positive tone for the day ahead. As I continued this practice, I noticed a shift in my mood and energy levels.

Encouraged by this progress, I gradually integrated other self-care activities into my routine. I began journaling, reading more, and dedicating time to hobbies I had neglected. I even started new hobbies. Each small step compounded, leading to a greater sense of balance and fulfillment.

Now, self-care is a non-negotiable part of my life. I encourage you to find what works for you and start your journey in self care.

Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish; it’s essential. "You can not pour from an empty cup"!

Let’s explore a simple yet powerful self-care practice: mindful breathing.

This technique can help ground you, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm in your busy life.

What is Mindful Breathing?

Mindful breathing involves focusing your attention on your breath, allowing you to anchor yourself in the present moment.

This practice helps clear your mind and reduces stress by activating your body’s relaxation response.

How to Practice Mindful Breathing:
Find a Comfortable Position. This can be sitting or laying down in a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.

Close Your Eyes. This helps minimise distractions and enhances focus.

Inhale Deeply. Slowly breathe in through your nose for a count of four, filling your lungs completely.

Hold Your Breath. Pause for a count of four, allowing the air to nourish your body.

Exhale Slowly. Release your breath through your mouth for a count of six, imagining your stress leaving your body.

Imagine inhaling the light, exhaling the dark.

Repeat. Continue this cycle for a few minutes. If your mind wanders, gently bring your focus back to your breath.

Things have been absolutely CRAZY here with diagnosis taking over daily living. As we find our new routines and methods to navigate the days, I can slowly begin to resume work. It was a sudden exit from the work fold, however it will be a slow entrance back so the transition can be as smooth as possible.

Thanks for sticking with me, I really appreciate you staying around.
