Self-care is any action or behaviour that helps a person avoid health problems. Excessive stress may increase your risk for heart problems, for example. So, by definition, stress relief can help someone keep their ticker ticking.

Self-care also helps us sharpen our mental and physical health through better self-esteem, stress management, and overall well-being.

These behaviours help provide balance in an increasingly overstimulating world. Self-care forms an essential part of a lifestyle that keeps us healthy, happy, and more in tune with our minds and bodies.

Part 2 | Why Learn to Meditate?

A selection of benefits that are associated with meditating.

While meditation isn’t a cure-all, it can certainly provide some much-needed space in your life. Sometimes, that’s all we need to make better choices for ourselves, our families, and our communities. And the most important tools you can bring with you to your meditation practice are a little patience, some kindness for yourself, and a comfortable place to sit.

When we meditate, we inject far-reaching and long-lasting benefits into our lives. And bonus: you don’t need any extra gear or an expensive membership.

Here are five reasons to meditate:

👌 Understanding your pain
🤫 Lower your stress
😘 Connect better
🤓 Improve focus
🤯 Reduce brain chatter

Part 1 | What is Meditation?

How do you learn to meditate? In mindfulness meditation, we’re learning how to pay attention to the breath as it goes in and out, and notice when the mind wanders from this task. This practice of returning to the breath builds the muscles of attention and mindfulness.

When we pay attention to our breath, we are learning how to return to, and remain in, the present moment—to anchor ourselves in the here and now on purpose, without judgement.

The idea behind mindfulness seems simple—the practice takes patience and kindness.

WARM SALADS FOR OPTIMAL WELLNESS & DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Food is an important part of healing, and it is interesting to note the differences between the Chinese and Western ideas of health foods. In the West, many may consider raw food, salads, juices, smoothies and fruit to be the ultimate health foods, while Chinese Medicine focuses on foods that support digestion and can therefore be fully utilised by the body. While it is true that “you are what you eat”, it would perhaps be more correct to say that “you are what you can digest” – a digestive system that is operating at less than optimal levels will leave patients feeling tired and heavy, as undigested food lingers in the system and throws out intestinal health.
As digestion is at the foundation of treating conditions as diverse as asthma, IBS, allergies and arthritis, the foods that we choose to eat will play a big role in healing. To support digestive health, Chinese Medicine recommends warm, cooked foods (and no cold drinks!). This can be quite a departure initially for some patients, so we will be posting some food and recipe ideas to inspire you in the kitchen!

Salads can be packed full of valuable nutrients, depending on the variety of vegetables you put in them. Also, the amount of calories in your salad can vary widely because of the type of cheese, dressing, nuts and protein you may add onto it. The more raw vegetables your salad has, the more nutrients you will gain. When it comes to leafy greens, darker is better. They have the most nutrients. Case in point: Kale and spinach have over 10 times more immune-boosting vitamins A and C than iceberg lettuce.

One quick and easy way to make your salads Chinese-Medicine-friendly is to convert them to warm salads – perfect in summer and winter! Salad combinations are limited only by your imagination.

When we are KIND, we inspire others to BE KIND, and it creates a RIPPLE EFFECT that spreads outwards. Just as a pebble creates waves when it is dropped in a pond, acts of KINDNESS ripple outwards, touching others lives and inspiring kindness everywhere the wave goes.

Every day we are given opportunities to show LOVE and KINDNESS to those around us, including ourselves.

V I T A M I N C is a water-soluble vitamin that’s found in many foods, particularly fruits and vegetables.

It’s well known for being a potent antioxidant, as well as having positive effects on skin health and immune function.

It’s also vital for collagen synthesis, connective tissue, bones, teeth and your small blood vessels.

The human body cannot produce or store vitamin C. Therefore, it’s essential to consume it regularly in sufficient amounts.

The current daily value (DV) for vitamin C is 90 mg.

Deficiency symptoms include bleeding gums, frequent bruising and infections, poor wound healing, anemia and scurvy.

What does an anti-inflammatory diet do?

Your immune system becomes activated when your body recognises anything that is foreign—such as an invading microbe, plant pollen, or chemical. This often triggers a process called inflammation. Intermittent bouts of inflammation directed at truly threatening invaders protect your health.

However, sometimes inflammation persists, day in and day out, even when you are not threatened by a foreign invader. That's when inflammation can become your enemy. Many major diseases that plague us—including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer's—have been linked to chronic inflammation.

An anti-inflammatory diet should include these foods:
🍅 tomatoes
🫒 olive oil
🥬 green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards
🥜 nuts like almonds and walnuts
🐠 fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines
🍓fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges

D I D
Y O U
K N O W .. Muscoloskeletal massage (MST) and remedial massage are both offered at the clinic?

MST massage is an extension of remedial massage, adding additional advanced techniques, similar to that of a physiotherapy session. It involves the release of tension in muscles and resolving range of motion issues. This is done by the use of trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques and proprooceptive neuromuscle facilitation.

This is true body work.

Remedial massage techniques differ slightly, mainly involving deep tissue massage, to facilitate release of muscular tension. This style of massage addresses specifically painful areas caused by physical activities, trauma or structural problems, with myofascial release often used.

Massage is appropriate for many acute or chronic pain conditions, rehabilitation from complex injuries or surgery and is useful for clients of any age. It is not uncommon for both massage styles to be used together in a treatment, as our practitioners will review and address your condition and apply the most appropriate treatment, so that you can recover and maintain your condition.

What are the effects of gluten on your body?

Pros
B vitamins: Fortified breads and cereals are a major source of B vitamins. Gluten-free flours usually aren’t fortified with these important nutrients, which help your heart, brain and red blood cells.

Protein: Gluten is a type of protein, so consuming gluten adds more of this nutrient to your diet. Wheat gluten flour, for example, has 23 grams of protein per quarter-cup.

Low-fat: Wheat gluten flour has only half a gram of fat per quarter-cup. Of course, other ingredients and add-ons can make the fat count of a food item climb.

Iron: Iron content can vary according to type of gluten, but wheat flour is fortified with this mineral to make up for the iron lost as wheat is refined to flour.

Cons
Celiac disease: If you have this autoimmune digestive disease, gluten can damage your small intestine and impact your body’s ability to absorb important nutrients. You may experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and anemia.

Gluten sensitivities: Even people who don’t have celiac disease may be sensitive to gluten.Individuals with gluten sensitivities may experience some of the same symptoms as those with celiac disease when exposed to this protein.

Other ailments: Some people believe that gluten can contribute to other ailments, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, headaches, depression, weight gain and more.

Acupuncture can help ease pain, but did you know it can be effective for other health issues, like allergies, anxiety and depression?

Six common conditions that acupuncture can treat:

Seasonal allergies
One well-researched effect of acupuncture is reducing inflammation throughout the body. Acupuncture stimulates chemicals that reduce swelling and quiet unwanted immune responses and allergic reactions. Acupuncture also helps strengthen the digestive system, which can be a source of unrecognized inflammation, making allergies worse. With just a few weeks of regular treatment, acupuncture can help eliminate the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

Digestive complaints
Gas, bloating, constipation or bowel changes are signs that there is something wrong in your digestive system. Acupuncture is known to regulate digestive function. In fact, there is an entire school of thought in Chinese medicine that treats the digestive system for any illness, based on the belief that when the gut functions properly, the entire system can maintain its balance.

Sciatic pain
Sciatica is a terribly painful disorder caused by the compression of the sciatic nerve—a very long nerve that begins in the low back and branches down into each leg, continuing all the way to the feet. Those who experience it know sciatic pain is challenging to calm with over-the-counter medication. The pain can be felt anywhere along the nerve and keep you from enjoying daily life. Acupuncture can be incredibly useful in treating sciatic pain. I have seen a patient pain-free for the first time in years after only a few acupuncture sessions. It is definitely worth a try.

Insomnia
Insomnia can come in many forms. Some people have difficulty falling asleep while others feel tired only to find that as soon as they lie down, their brains become active. Others have no trouble falling asleep, but wake up during the night—usually between 2-3 a.m.—and have trouble going back to sleep. Some people struggle with both falling and staying asleep. Properly placed acupuncture needles coupled with herbal medicine can be life changing for people who need to get more ZZZs.

Anxiety, stress and depression
Maintaining a stable emotional state can be difficult, and for those people who all-too-often feel unsettled, acupuncture can help balance and regulate emotions. It stimulates the part of your nervous system that promotes a calm state of being. It can help you feel settled, grounded and positive. It also relaxes the brain and muscles, which reduces stress throughout the body.

KIDS!
Many parents don't feel they have options other than antibiotics or over-the-counter drugs for common ailments like viral ear infections, eczema, constipation, colic, sleep disorders, allergies and behavioral issues. That's where Eastern medicine can come in. Chinese medicine, which has been safely treating children and adolescents for thousands of years, offers herbal medicine, acupuncture and non-needle techniques, such as pediatric massage, tuina and shoni shin, as natural options to complement Western medicine for our littlest patients.
