As summer quickly approaches and with much of Queensland starting to receive heatwave warnings, it's important to know how to prepare. For older people this is particularly important as extremely hot weather can create unique health challenges.

During these months, it's important to stay cool by:
๐Ÿšฐ Staying hydrated and drinking 6 - 8 glasses of water a day at regular intervals
๐Ÿ  Finding ways to keep your home cool including closing window coverings when there is direct sunlight
๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ Keeping activity to a minimum during the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm)

For more tips on keeping cool and preparing your home for the warmer months, visit Queensland Health https://www.qld.gov.au/health/staying-healthy/environmental/heatsafe/how-to-keep-cool

Monday, 24 September 1945 โ€“ 80 years ago today โ€“ Queensland Governor Sir Leslie Orme Wilson officially opened the Kenmore Repatriation Sanatorium on the site of what is now Bolton Clarke Fairview, Pinjarra Hills. The first 12 veteran patients had been in residence in August under the watchful eyes of medical superintendent Dr George Cherry and Matron Viola Everett from the 112 Australian General Base Hospital. The sanatorium was founded to support ex-service personnel suffering from tuberculosis and continued to serve the veteran community until its closure in 1994.

Ninety years ago today, Melbourne's The Star published this account of a day in the life of our nurses. Our teams bring the same kindness and commitment to high quality care today for clients and residents across Australia.

From our very first nurse, Nurse Ferguson, to 16,000+ employees across Australia today, on this Aged Care Employee Day we recognise the dedication and resilience that has been a hallmark of our teams for more than a century. Itโ€™s timely that today also marks one of our more recent milestones โ€“ the day we came together as Bolton Clarke in 2017, honouring early community leaders Brigadier William Kinsey Bolton and Lady Janet Clarke.
A very big Aged Care Employee Day thank you to all the Bolton Clarke teams for 140 years of caring.

It's National Diabetes Week this week and to mark the occasion, Bolton Clarke Research Institute Senior Research Fellow Dr Rajna Ogrin has been chatting with Diabetes Victoria about foot health.
If you have diabetes, taking care of your feet is really important. High blood sugar can affect your nerves and blood flow, which means you might not feel injuries and they may take longer to heal. This can lead to serious problems like ulcers or even amputationsโ€”but the good news is most of these can be prevented!
Top tips for keeping your feet healthy include:
* Check your feet every day โ€“ Look for cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling. Use a mirror or ask someone to help if you canโ€™t see well.
* Wash and dry your feet daily โ€“ Especially between your toes. Keep your skin soft with moisturiser (but not between the toes).
* Trim your nails carefully โ€“ Or ask a podiatrist to help.
* Wear comfortable shoes and socks โ€“ Avoid tight shoes or seams that rub.
* Never walk barefoot โ€“ Even at home.
* See a podiatrist regularly โ€“ They can spot problems early and help you manage them.
* Get help quickly โ€“ If you notice anything unusual, donโ€™t wait.
