Meal times can feel incredibly tricky for our neurodivergent kids. Sometimes focusing on food even with praise can feel like pressure which can trigger a stress response and put them off eating altogether 😢

So what to do instead?
Focus on using declarative and neutral language instead of praise, keeping mealtimes positive and pressure free.

Feeling like nothing is working around food? Our feeding team Sophie (speech pathologist) and Cath (dietitian) are here to support families, teens and adults with feeding challenges 💜

🌟We are excited to be working collaboratively with to provide psychology and positive behaviour support services to the Far South Coast Community.🌟

💜The Gray Area shares our values of individualised, compassionate care and a strengths based approach that recognises each client’s unique needs and capabilities.

Myles Cherry, Registered Psychologist, will have availability for psychological assessments, along with limited appointments for ongoing therapeutic support. Myles previously lived in the region and has a strong personal connection to the far south coast 🌊

Limited appointments will also be available with Casey Sunerton, Advanced Behaviour Support Practitioner. Casey specialises in complex psychosocial disabilities.

We are so thrilled that we have two amazing OTs joining the Bounce team next month!

Martina, an Occupational Therapist specialising in sensory integration, had a vision to establish a qualified multidisciplinary team to provide holistic and evidence-based care in the Bega Valley.

Bounce Therapy Services has now been providing accessible and compassionate care for 3 years with clinics in Bega and more recently Merimbula.

There is so much pressure at Christmas to buy your children the perfect toy. You might be this help my child's development?" "Is it educational?".

When we're thinking about language development, the key is to look for toys which provide opportunities to enhance interactions between you and your child. The more words and sentences you can use when playing, the better!

This can look like:

🧸 Simple toys
🎁 Old school toys

Lovely morning meeting some future kindy kids and parents at Bega Valley Public School orientation today. Come say hi and grab some resources on getting into the swing of school and lunchbox tips.

Starting school can bring on lots of big feelings for children and their caregivers. It's so great having these sessions to help everyone feel more comfortable and confident.

At Bounce lately:
1) Loving our new sensory wall in the gym put together by Recreational Therapist Jess and some of our young people 💜
2) Speech Pathologist Sophie interviewed on ABC radio for World Stroke Day
3) Dietitian Cath finding these cute sandwich cutters at K-mart Bega - perfect to add a bit of variation for our kids who get bored easily 🥪

October 17th is DLD Awareness day! Here is our speech pathologist Sophie is completing some invaluable training with the DLD Project on the latest research and evidence-based strategies to support families living with DLD.

You may never have heard of DLD, or Developmental Language Disorder, but it affects about 1 child in every Australian classroom.

It is a lifelong condition that causes difficulty with language.

People with DLD may struggle to understand words, follow instructions or answer questions. They might also struggle to find the right words to express their ideas, or have difficulty reading and writing.

DLD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is not attributed to other conditions such as hearing loss, intellectual disability or autism, but may co-occur with ADHD or dyslexia. There is no single known cause for DLD.

People with DLD can succeed in life with the right support that recognises their unique strengths and challenges!
