Dear Followers of the Page.

I originally created this page as a forum to share my latest writing and news, more than ten years ago. Much has changed for me, and I am writing less and recording more - videos and podcasts. In fact, producing podcasts takes up most of my time away from direct client work.

On this page you will still be able to access my views about child protection, out of home care, and related endeavours. It will just be in podcast form. I hope you take many positive things away from my podcast guests, as well as myself.

Looking forward to ten more years of sharing.

Best wishes.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has delivered much-needed support for children and young adults who have a neurodevelopmental condition or other diagnosed disability. Psychology service provision is one of these supports. However, in recent times the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has begun to shift away from funding psychological support via the NDIS, seeing Psychology as a treatment service for mental health challenges faced by NDIS participants and more appropriately funded via the Better Access to Mental Health Care scheme....

How do we effectively support children who've experienced trauma when conventional behaviour management approaches fail ...

How do we effectively support children who've experienced trauma when conventional behaviour management approaches fail them? This powerful training session delivers a transformative framework for understanding what's really happening beneath challenging behaviours.

At the heart of this approach are three critical questions: What's truly driving a child's behaviour? How can we respond therapeutically to those underlying needs? And how will we measure our success? Through the innovative AAA model—examining Attachment representations, Arousal levels, and Accessibility to needs provision—we explore the internal world of traumatised children.

Children who've experienced relational trauma develop distorted beliefs about themselves ("I'm unlovable"), others ("Adults are unreliable"), and their world ("It's unsafe"). Their nervous systems often operate in overdrive, making them anxiety-prone and reactive. Most significantly, they've learned that getting needs met requires extraordinary effort—explaining the demanding behaviours that frustrate so many caregivers.

Traditional behaviour management strategies like ignoring unwanted behaviours, reward systems, and punishments simply don't work with these children. They weren't raised in environments where reinforcement was consistent, making these approaches ineffective at best and harmful at worst.

The AURA approach offers a powerful alternative: being Accessible to reassure children we're available, responding with Understanding through our words and actions, being proactively Responsive to needs before children must demand them, and maintaining Attunement—that crucial emotional connection that communicates worth and care.

For foster carers, kinship carers, residential workers, teachers, and other professionals supporting children recovering from tough starts, this training provides practical, compassionate strategies that address the real reasons behind behaviours of concern. By shifting our focus from managing behaviours to healing relationships, we create the conditions for genuine growth and recovery.

Episode 13 of The Secure Start Podcast, with Andrew Isaac of BSN Social Care and the Children's Services Development Group (CSDG) is now live.

Andrew is one of the earliest supporters of my work to make themselves known to me, and we have corresponded on and off over the last 10+ years. Recently, I was pleased to do a podcast as part of BSN Social Care’s carer portal of online resources and put BSN Social Care in touch with Emerging Minds here in Australia for shared endeavours.

Andrew is the Chair of BSN Social care, the parent company of six of the UK’s leading foster care agencies servicing much of England and Wales. Andrew is also the Chair of the Children’s Services Development Group (CSDG), a coalition of leading independent providers of care and specialist education services, who work closely with policymakers, regulators and local authorities to develop policy solutions that will ensure the best possible outcomes for children and young people with complex needs. Andrew was previously the marketing and communications manager for the National Fostering Agency, which is when we first interacted with each other. I was under the impression that he retired some time ago, but as we will hear that does not appear to be the case.

I hope you enjoy the podcast.

Lar Nossa Senhora do Livramento, or "Livramento" for short, is an inspirational home for girls and young women in need, with an interesting 215 year history! That's right, 215 years since a group of concerned citizens of Porto established a refuge for young mums in precarious circumstances in the wake of the Napoleonic invasions of Portugal. My guests on this episode of The Secure Start Podcast are Ivone, Maria, Carla, Liliana, and Bruna. They each are responsible for aspects of the therapeutic residential care programme at Livramento for girls and young women aged between 6 years of age and 25 years of age. I hope you enjoy the podcast as much as I did and please leave a comment with your thoughts or feedback.
