February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month 🦋

Did you know there is no routine screening test for ovarian cancer?
That’s why it’s important to understand your body’s normal, learn your family’s health history and take note of the ovarian cancer signs and symptoms.

Here’s how you can take action this month:
1. Learn the symptoms: Bloating, pelvic pain, difficulty eating and urinary urgency can be signs of ovarian cancer.
2. Know your risk: If you have a family history of hereditary cancers (such as breast, ovarian, pancreatic or prostate), consider genetic testing and counseling.
3. Spread awareness: Share this post to educate others about hereditary cancer risks.

If something feels off with your body or symptoms are new and persist for more than two weeks, it is recommended that you see a doctor.

National Skin Cancer Action Week (17-23 November) highlights that we need to do more to keep sun protection front of mind when UV is 3 or above.
This National Skin Cancer Action Week, Cancer Council is joining forces with The Australasian College of Dermatologists to encourage all Australians to make sun protection a daily habit to protect their skin from UV exposure and reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.
Often called our ‘national cancer’, Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime.
When exposed to UV radiation, it doesn’t take long for skin damage including sunburn to occur, increasing the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. In fact, over-exposure to UV radiation causes up to 95% of melanomas. In every region across Australia, it is likely to reach extreme levels of UV over the summer months.

💞 Breast cancer is most often associated with having a painless lump. However, your symptoms may vary depending on your specific type of breast cancer. While it’s true that many breast cancer patients have a lump, not all of them will. So it’s important to know the other signs & symptoms.
Some common early warning signs include:
💞 skin changes, such as swelling, redness or other visible differences in one or both breasts.
💞 an increase in size or change in shape of the breast(s)
💞 ni**le discharge other than breast milk
💞 general pain in/on any part of the breast
💞 lumps or nodules felt on or inside of the breast(s)
💞 lumps in armpit area
💞 peeling or flaking of the ni**le skin
💞 irritation
💞 changes in texture of the breast

Early detection gives the best possible chance of survival, so it’s important to be breast aware to ensure that you can spot any changes as soon as they appear.

📆 Book an appointment with your doctor if you have any of the above symptoms.

Doctors make sure that you are receiving the right medicines for your condition, however, a Home Medicines Review makes sure that you are taking those medicines correctly to avoid complications that could lead to hospitalisation.

Do any of the following apply to you or a loved one? If so, then talk to your doctor about arranging a home medication review.
💊 Recent changes to medications
💊 Taking more than 5 medications
💊 Recently been discharged from hospital
💊 Suspected of non-compliance
💊 Under the care of multiple specialists

The purpose of a home medicines review is to help people better understand and manage their medicines. This supports the quality use of medicines in addition to reducing adverse medicine events which may occur when the medicines aren’t taken correctly. The overall result is better health management and outcomes.

🌸 It’s Women’s Health Week 2024! 🌸

Women’s Health Week is Australia’s largest event dedicated to the health and well-being of all women, girls, and gender-diverse people.

From 2-6 September, a reminder to dedicate time to focus on the wellbeing, strength, and health of women everywhere. Whether it’s physical health, mental wellness, or preventative care, now’s the time to take action.

When was your last Women’s Health Check?
Women are recommended to have a general check-up with their GP every year.
Part of the check-up will involve talking to your doctor about your medical history, your family’s history of disease, and your lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise habits, and whether or not you smoke or drink alcohol.
Seeing your doctor for regular medical check-ups will help you stay healthy and pick up early warning signs of disease or illness.
