Food in Focus: Summer – Fire Element

In hot weather, drink warm liquids to induce sudden sweating and thus cool the body down. The same principle stands for eating spicy/pungent foods: the sweating bring the body’s heat to the surface to disperse the heat and cool down the body. For this purpose eat red or green chilli, Cayenne pepper, green, black and red pepper, fresh ginger and horseradish. However, avoid excessive consumption of spicy food (why, I will discuss in the next ‘Food in Focus’ post).

A cold drink or ice cream feels refreshing at the time, however the cold actually contracts the stomach lining, where we absorb food and therefore interferes with digestion and weakens its optimum function. Common fruits that cool summer heat are watermelons, apples, lemons and limes. Other cooling summer foods are cucumber, tofu, salads, sprouts (especially soy, mung and alfalfa).
Let's hope we'll have a few more summery days coming this summer!☀️

Cupping is an ancient therapy and part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where special cups are put on the skin and left on for a few minutes to create suction. In TCM, the function of cupping therapy is to promote free flow of qi and blood, diminishing pain & swelling by resolving stagnation in the meridian. In clinics, cupping is mainly used in conditions like: muscle tension (lower back, upper back, shoulders, leg), digestive complaints, coughs, colds and asthma. While in ancient times cups were made out of animal horn, today cups can be glass, silicone, bamboo, or hard plastic.

Cupping is believed to have been around for over 5000 years and it seems to have stood the test of time. More details to follow......
